Just when they are reaching their peak in ripeness (is that a word?) the skin splits! We have been eating them, no problem, and have done a little canning, everything seems ok. But why is the skin splitting? Vertical splits down the side.
Paste tomatoes splitting
Lots of mine are doing that this year too. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the fluctuation in moisture?
Hi Joan, see the thread "How are your tomatoes doing this year" MaryE reports that she thinks it is a moisture issue also. I peeled the skin on my 'splits' and no damage beyond that.
Thanks Sue!
I had that problem here as well this year. I am told it is from infrequent watering. We had a terrible drought this summer and just could not keep up with the watering.
