I hate these nasty things!! These are the kind we use to love to kill as a kid. We'd wait til just after dark and then get the salt shaker and go out on the front porch and cover them up with salt.
We loved watching them squirm around lol I know we were mean little kids! But there was nothing like stepping on one of these things barefooted! You couldn't hardly wash that stuff off! Ewwww!
No wonder I have a snail/slug problem!!
i'm with you mollybee, i hate these things. they are totally disgusting and i don't think you were mean as a kid and i'm not mean as an adult. they eat my costly plants and make a mess of the gardens. i have some bait i've used a couple weeks ago and it is working good, so i'm going to put it down again. it also works on cutworms, millipedes, cutworms, earwigs, slugs and snails. maybe something else too. i bought enough to put it down again now and in a couple more weeks. i have lots of babies right now and i'm trying to cut the cycle. it covers about 5000 sq ft, is by ortho called getta bug plus, or something like that, and a bottle is about $13.00. i have about 3500 sq ft of gardens, so 3 bottles should give me 4 applications. a little expensive but what product isn't today. i am not one to hand pick bugs. they gross me out tooooooo much. friends were surprised i was enjoying gardening so much because of bugs. lol i'm looking at pictures of some bug the other day and my dh says "i didn't know you were interested in bugs?" i said, i'm not but i can only find out if they are good or bad by identifying them. i've had more holes in my plants this year than ever. part i think is i have not put mulch down in 2 years and i have a lot more earth than ever, and my gardens are 4 years old now and the bug population is just getting bigger as the gardens have increased and grown. such is the life of the gardener hey? the good the bad the ugly and the gorgeous too! well i guess i've been long winded enough. lol hang in there mollybee and take out the salt, it will do your stress a world of good. he he he (evil laugh)
Mollybee I hate the darn slugs too. They are decimating my basil and hostas and a voodoo lily and I have not had a chance to go out there and hand pick (with a pin, not my hand) and fry them in salt this entire season because I just began to be able to get out there, period...
that's why I want a duck - they love to eat them
I think I am going to start making night hunts again. It really seemed to help before. I always made the boys go with me and they'd pick 'em up with a old pair of kitchen tongs(that were only used for snail/slug hunting) Then we'd drop them in a bucket full of salty water.
With the kids back in school now, I guess its left up to me :(
I buy the pellets and after seeing this thread I finally remembered to go spread them around the plants. Dead snails and slugs everywhere today!
Hmmmmm sounds like I need to look into the pellets! sounds easier than hand pickin them!
Thanks Cala!
Mollybee, yes, so much easier. I have lots of beneficial bugs and lots of birds in the gardens and the pellets don't bother them. If you're afraid your cats will eat the pellets(mine never have) you can put them(the pellets, not the cats) under something.
I get these at a gh supply place cause they have big industrial size bags of them, but I think Kmart and Lowes sell them too.
Thanks for the info Cala, I'll do some calling around tomorrow and see if I can find some.
Is there a certain name for them?
I usually just ask for snail bait in pellet form.
Got it. Thanks!
Here in Alaska, we don't have very many garden foes, but slugs are certainly a problem with out cool, wet weather. I use the pellets, as well. They are made with iron phosphate, and when the slugs eat it, it turns there insides into mush and they quit feeding soon after, then die within days. I buy 25 lb. bags of Sluggo for about $50, plus postage (which is not cheap), but it is certainly worth it. I like the fact that this product isn't harmful to birds or pets or people... what a concept! It is also sold under the name 'Escargot', and I'm sure there are others.
Thanks Weezi! I'll have to remember all this. As I am fighting the ugly nasty things all year, I better put it on my list to get!
Mollybee:
Weez let you know about SLUGGO here's a link to check it out http://www.biconet.com/crawlers/sluggo.html
There are places to get it that are alot cheaper.
..............The ol'tom cat, Dennis................
O goodie! Thanks Dennis! Heading over there now to check it out!
Thanks a million!
Mollybee:
We buy ours out of a place in California. I can dig through the papers and give you a site, if you want .
It's about 1/3 Cheaper...............Dennis
O cool, I'd like that info if it isn't too hard to find.
Thanks :)
me too me too :)
Ditto three?
Hi, everybody. Dennis should check back when he posts! Here's the web address for Peaceful Valley Farms where I order Sluggo in bulk. I think it is in Oregon or Washington.

Thanks, Weez ☺
thank you weez. your a darlin'.
You're most welcome! Anything to help out garden buddies who are beseiged by our slimy little nemesis! Too bad we can't collect them and sell them as a gourmet appetizer!
Hee hee Weezi! How on earth some folks can consider them to be gourmet is beyond me! YUCK!
Thanks for the info
Weez & Molly, if'n I ever get onto Survivor and have to eat them, I'll let you know how they taste ☺
Maybe a little horseradish, a little Worchestershire...hmmm.
Oh yeah, the horseradish alone would work :)
ewwww I don't think ANYTHING would kill the slime! yuck
there are people who consider these disgusting things a gourmet delicasy? this is one of the dictionaries descriptions of "Del"i*ca*cy, n.; pl. Delicacies" "7. That which is alluring, delicate, or refined; a luxury or pleasure; something pleasant to the senses, especially to the sense of taste; a dainty; as, delicacies of the table." not exactly my difinition of a slug. lol ;)
this is more along the lines of mine :)ha ha ha
Look at it this way, debi. Those little buggers would never slip off your fingers and into your lap... too much rubber cement gunky... whatever it is. Yuck!
I always hated stepping on one with bare feet! You can't hardly wash that stuff off eaither! YUCK
I usually carry scissors with me and just snip them in half without touching them... saves lots of scrubbing! I have to admit that the sleek palomino ones don't look all that untasty... I mean, we eat snails don't we? It looks to me like the palominos have creamier centers... sort of like a good Fanny May candy.
eeeewwwwww NOoooo you know them thangs are Nasty!!
It's all relative. They're a real treat if you're a chicken.
lol lol lol thank god i'm not a chicken then, cuz i sure would go hungry. lol
weez, we are of like mind, after i took the picture those suckers got cut in half. was gonna take a picture of that and post it but......i figured you'd all know i was crazy then! lol there would be no hiding the evil slug killing debi, from you all. :)
Yes, though I admire the tenacity of the common slug, I cannot allow them to live on and procreate. I made a vow to myself to kill every slug I see, and sometimes that means getting down on all fours to relocate on I drop in the grass. Each slug is potentially going to create thousands!
These slimy little rapscallions ate an entire flower garden to the ground on me in a matter of just a few months once. I was fit to be tied! And I didn't find out what to do about it until way too late. I use the Escar-Go! product from Gardens Alive and concur with Weez--it's great stuff! Here's a link to the product...

You people are grossing me out even suggesting that someone would consider eating these things. EEEEEEEWWW! You couldn't pay me enough to eat them!
Isn't there a reality show about that sort of thing?
oooo yes, and in fact I watch the exact show!! Fear Factor!
These folks had to eat these same kind of slugs!
I forgot all about that!! But yes it was GROSSSSS
Slugs seem a bit easier to swallow than many of the other things they have people eat on the reality shows! I think I'd pass on the fresh blood drawn from a goat or the marinated raw fish that sat in the sun for a day!
eeewwww you know it!!
Fish eyeballs, unhatched baby ducks embreo's and tons of other nasty things!
Gives me chills! yuck!
