Trumpet Vines

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Spring Oaks, does your book say anything about Podranea?

Roy, UT(Zone 6b)

TwinLakes and SpringOaks -- I'm working on starting some local red variety of trumpet vines, Catsmeow is working on sending some cream ones, and Smockette offered some pink vines. I'll take all the varieties I can get. If TwinLakes is willing to share the yellow one, I'll be glad to send postage (paypal or MO). Do you have any other colors or other vines that might grow well in zone 6?

I have grape vines (seedless red and green) that I can trade also, if anyone wants them. They're growing like weeds and have huge grape clusters this year.

I've become "trumpet vine aware" and I see them everywhere. The most unusual and beautiful one I've seen is in a front yard where they have trained the vine around what looks like an old-fashioned umbrella clothesline (but with a smaller "umbrella"). It winds around the pole with huge knarley trunks and cascades over the top of the small umbrella frame. It looks like a tree until you examine it closer.

Sweetwater, TX(Zone 7a)

Utah ~ That "umbrella trumpet" sounds neat! Take a picture! I, too, have developed "trumpet vine awareness!" I just stopped by a house that had a beautiful one spilling over a fence (yellow and dark red trumpets!) - knocked on the door to ask for cuttings (I'm bold) but no one was home - will go back later. I just planted 2 orange t.v.'s and they're putting out runners!

Hey, guys, I checked out all of the notes in the Plants Database under campsis grandiflora and campsis radicans...The reviews are NOT good. Did you read it? I'm getting scared that it is going to take over my yard and be invasive!

What do y'all think?!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

UG, well, here I go with my song of woes.
Sunday afternoon I was on my way to another MC meeting & my Honda overheated. I immediately stopped b/c of the alum engine. I pulled off the road at 1488 Flea Mkt. I saw some partial shade so I pulled in there.
While I was waiting for the car to cool down, I was looking @ the greenery. Guess what was growing wild & had runners right out into the driveway? Native Trumpet vines.
Have clippers, will travel! I traveled right over to the driveway & clipped 3 runners, @ about 12' long!
Guess what is on the agenda for tonite. 2 more flats!!!

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Just tell me what to do and I will do it.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

well it appears that i'm having a problem getting my cream trumpet vine to root. I'm going to keep trying though. A couple of you have sent money for postage already in order to recieve a cutting. If for some reason I can not get this thing to root,I have kept records of who sent postage and I will gladly refund your money. You guys cross your fingers for me--i'm trying! I've just got toooooooo many things growing here and have no idea as to how or when to try and root many of them. Imagine that, having too many plants.
Sixty + brugs,70 + stapelias and who knows how many other perrenials, shrubs and such. Houseplants we just AIN"T gonna mention.

Sweetwater, TX(Zone 7a)

Some pictures of a local man's "ancient" trumpet vine - now tree sized - here it is spilling over an 8 foot fence. He said he got a yellow one (Campsis Flava) from Wayside many years ago, and in recent years it has "turned" to partially red and yellow - on the same vine!

Here's another pic - this one has both yellow and red flowers and also shows the infamous ugly giant seed pods that t.v. owners hates but that, I guess, songbirds like!

TRUMPET VINES FOR TRADE/POSTAGE
Utah Gardener and Anyone Else,

I have two 1-gallon pots of trumpet vines (both orangy red) for postage or trade. I know most of you are looking for the other colors, but anyone who wants them is welcome to them! They are 2 year old plants; great root systems; 2 feet high (already cut back); woody bases (1/2 inch "trunks); they have put out several yards of runners in the last month - very prolific growers.

Any takers? I can mail now or wait until it gets cooler. Whatever. If no takers, I'll post on the plant trading area in a week or so. Check the US Postal service website for shipping estimates to my zip, 13760. http://postcalc.usps.gov/

Thanks! - Cheri 'ANewYorker'

Had a garage sale, and sold the trumpet vines! Thanks anyway, folks. Enjoy your vines!

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

ANewYorker,
Does that mean you sold the one I requested? It's fine if you did; I just need to know.
Thanks

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

TLC, you have mail.
Sure glad I tried 2 flats, 3 in @ pot, of Desert Trumpets b/c sure enough not all are rooting. But I do have new growth on most of them.
Native Trumpets looked like they all croaked BUT low & be hold new little green leaves are coming up.
j_j, I overlooked the first part of your thread, even though I printed the thing out so I could do it right. I didn't put the joints of the Deserts in soil but they are still green & mostly doing fine.
I read the thread again & that is the way I did the Natives. They all lost all their greenery but are now putting out new growth fr the soil level.
I think these babies may be ready to go out in the world in another month.
:~)

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, Smockette, congratulations on your success! Wow. I'm impressed. Good job! Don't give up on the ones that have not rooted yet b/c some may take more time to root. I'm not an expert (since I've only done this once) but maybe trying to root them this time of year may also be a factor too. (So stressfully hot!) Remember, I did mine in March. We'll eventually have to compare notes, lol.

I'm glad to hear your cuttings are coming back and new little green leaves are coming up. You said that they looked like they croaked? That may of happened because the leaves just couldn't get enough water that it needed since it had NO roots yet to suck up the water from the soil. That's why it's best to mist the leaves and keep them covered with a plastic dome to keep the leaves moist until roots form approx 30 days later. But in this heat outside, I can see that it would be tricky to do without frying the cuttings.

This has been a good first-time learning experience for both of us this year. Maybe next year we'll do better! :D Please keep me posted. I'd love to see how they do and would also love to see some pictures if you can.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, I have @ least 8 Natives w/new leaves & about 25-30 of the Desert Trumpets, at least I think they are growing.
They are all in flats of qts, next to the east side of house. They only get morning sun & then are completely shaded the rest of the time. That area is very humid. I can tell by all the new little skeeters that attack me every time I get down close to ck the babies.
Sorry about no pix. I just told Roomy I want a digital camera. He said I would have to have the 'stuff' for the computer to take the pix & put it in a thread??? Over my head, but maybe if I'm good, Santa will bring me one. :~)

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, those growing conditions sound great!!! "All the new little skeeters" thriving there is a dead give-away that the cuttings will do fine, lol. I'm sure if you give them a little more time and lovin' ... they'll all root beautifully. And please don't worry about the pix ... ;) But be sure to be good ... Santa will be sure to bring you something wonderful ... LOL!!!

Sweetwater, TX(Zone 7a)

Twin Lakes,
Sorry! I didn't get a request from you. I received one email from you on 8/19 asking me how much it would be to mail it - I sent a reply with approximate charges and a link to the USPS site, but never received a reply from you. I assumed that the shipping was too much, or you just weren't interested.

I just rechecked my email and reaffirmed that the only email I received from you says "What do you think the postage would be on it from your zip to my -----? Thanks -- TwinLakesChef" I feel bad! I didn't think, from the wording of this email, that you wanted it for sure! Sorry again!

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Certainly no problem. That Email addy just got spammed again. Something is wrong with it. Have just started some Fall housecleaning and have no business planting much more.

Have emailed some people and stuff is bouncing back; going to download virus info and do a good check on things before I email anyone else!
Thanks again!

Sweetwater, TX(Zone 7a)

Oh no, TLC, so sorry about your emailing issues! We use virus protection and have very good results. Hope that works well for you. Happy Housecleaning!

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Went in and learned how to block the Spam on that account so maybe that will help. Sure hope I didn't miss any important emails from DG'ers. There were a couple that bounced back at me saying they would not accept my email.
So I thought maybe I had a virus.

I couldn't tell who on DG I had emailed but at least 3 didn't go through.
My virus checker is scheduled to check for viruses frequently but I downloaded new virus patterns and ran the check again ~ didn't show any virus. All the spam is virus's but I don't open it; just block it and delete it.
Hope that is enough.
regards,
a

Well it seems that it wasn't meant for me to have or share this cream trumpet vine. Not only have I had an extremely hard time trying to get it rooted so I could share cuttings but i've noticed over the past few weeks the leaves have been dropping rapidly. Today I actually went to check the vine and it is brittle and lifeless. The entire thing has died and the weird thing about it is that I couldnt get it to root but some of it touched the ground and rooted itself. That part died also.
Dee, i'll get you the brug cuttings that you requested for the payment that you have already sent for the trumpet.

Margie,I just deposited the money order yesterday for the trumpet cutting that you wanted. Since the plant is no longer,i'll send your money back on monday unless you'd like to try some brugmansia cuttings also. Just let me know.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Cats
Sorry it didn't work; that is the way it goes sometimes. i hate defeats. My heart goes out to you

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Catsmeow, don't get dishearted. I have faith in you!
I can't tell you how many times I've tried to root cuttings only to be disappointed! And also, good seeds that grow for everyone else, don't grow for me sometimes.
I thought that had done it again w/the Desert Trumpets & was ready to throw them out when I noticed the stems were still green.
Those little babies fooled me & almost all have put on new leaves. Same thing w/the Natives. Thought they were goners! They lost all their leaves & now they have new little baby leaves.
If you are tired of messing with them, wait til spring. I'm sure that anyone you were going to trade w/, won't mind since everyone is starting to bring things in for the winter anyway.
I have babies for you & can send them next month or wait til spring. I can winter these over in my new GH or mail.
But keep smiling! Cuttings don't always root when we want them to.
:~)

Oh thanks Catsmeow I am looking forward to the Brugs and I am so sorry you lost your trumpet, maybe someone out there has a replacement for you...... :o)

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh, cats! I'm sorry! I was @ work when I read your message & I didn't understand that you lost your momma, too!:~(
I guess it went on to that Big Garden in the Sky!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Okay, mark Monday's date down!!! September 22!!
One of my little Dessert Trumpets has it's first bloom & the silly thing would fit in a 2" pot. It is actually planted in a qt with 2 others. But it definitely has a bloom!!! Less than 60 days to bloom propagated the wrong way!
So, UG, that one has your name on it for next spring!!!
Roomy is building me a new GH & I will get a label & put 'UG's First Bloomed' on it!
Catsmeow, yours is the next bloomer to help fill the void left by your cream that passed on. Then, jules_jewel, you are next for the great thread that started me thinking that I could do this. & then TLC, for the one that got sold off when you already loved it!!!
:~)
Who else wants some? I can overwinter them & ship next spring unless you want them now.

Thank you Smockette!

Sweetwater, TX(Zone 7a)

Smokette, THANK YOU for giving TLC a little vine of her own, since I unknowingly gave her orange trumpet away when her email was going haywire!

We can always rely on the kindness of gardeners!

: )

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

UG, just an update on your 'First Bloomed'. That little baby now has started growing it's own little seed pod. Can you believe that? It is only about an inch long but is definitely a seed pod.
Catsmeow, yours is still blooming! Seems like yours doesn't want UG's to outdo it. Bet she puts on a seed pod next.
Going to be trimming down Momma plant in the next month so I plan on starting some more just for the fun of it. They should do very well in my new GH!

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

If anyone out there would be interested in this 'monster vine', I will have seeds that should mature in a few weeks. They are the red and also some of the flava (yellow). I have the red marked, and of course didn't mark the yellow....so if you want to chance it, lmk.

Brinda :)

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Brinda, do you have a sister named Linda?
I knew a girl that had an aunt named Janina Beth that spelled her name like you do!
Would you like to trade some Desert Trumpet (baby pink w/burgandy veins) for your red & yellow?
Really more interested in your maiden name being Bartlett than the seeds.
This would just be too cool if these facts fit!!!
:~)

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Smockette,

No...I'm an only child and don't have an aunt by that name. I've never run on to anyone that spelled it that way. Cool...wish I could help you. And you are most welcome to seeds when they ripen. I got your email and will get back to you soon! Take care!

Brinda :)

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

This is just so strange b/c they are fr OKC!
Old-heimers kicking in here. They moved outside of OKC toward Ponca City, if I remember correctly. It was like country & they even named their road - Bartlett.
Yes, I would love some of your seeds. Would you like some of mine or would you prefer small plants?
I was just so excited this morning I couldn't go to sleep thinking I might have found my long (30+ yrs), lost girlfriend! Her aunt, my Godmother has passed away & I have no idea where to contact her or her sisters.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

Utah, if you are still interested in different varieties, let me know in the spring. I have two purple trumpet vines (with yellow throats?) that I planted last year. Didn't think they were going to make it, but they have really starting going to town in the last few weeks. I even spotted flower buds - yea!!!! yesterday. Does anyone know: Do the cutting root well in water? Are you able to collect seeds?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

UG, just another update on 'First Bloomed'. She has been in the GH since the Sunday b/4 TG.
I went to water in the GH after work today, & 'First Bloomed' was sitting in her flat. She had 4 blooms & I think I saw some more buds!
Now, you must remember she isn't 4" tall!!! I mean NOT 4" tall.
She is going to be a strong young girl come Spring!!!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Okay, spring has sprung in Texas. The babies are 6-12" tall, at least & ready for shipping.
UG, Cat, Jules, & TLC, send me some addys & I will get them in the mail. I am flying to Indy Thurs via SC & would like to get them out to ya'll b/4 then if your weather permits.
Cat, are you anywhere near Charlotte airport? :~)
I'll take an plant count of how many others are left if someone else wants one.
LMK

Prattville, AL(Zone 8a)

Any trumpet vine's left for trade? I have the old fashion orange...Bunches of them and a few other things I can trade. i am interested in any other color

Thx Dixiechick
