Who's been eating my fern?

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

This fern was sent to me by a DG member about 2 years ago. It survived both moves and was looking great 4-5 days ago but today it looks like someone clipped and stipped it :~(

I can't find any bugs on it this morning but something is hurting my baby! Any clues as to what the cause is and how to stop the hideous destruction???

If you don't see anything I'd assume it's munching at night. Do you have trouble with slugs? Some of those biggunz can really chow down on a plant they find tasty.

I do keep fighting slugs ans snails but they usuallu go after the tender young sprouts. Whatever this is leaves ther shoots alone until they are fully opened and then eats them. that one poor frond is just a bare stick now!

I have been doing night raids and haven't found any snails on it so far but the damage keeps getting worse.

That's what the deer do here!! lol - don't tell me you have such a beautiful visitor!!

LOL no the deer have not found my hidden little garden, but a squirrell and a racoon have. The squirrel lives in the trees on the other side of the fence and plants walnuts in the flowerbed and the coon figured out we are not going to feed the animals outside like the folks here before did and has decided to move on.

Whatever is doing this to the fern seems to cut off the leaces from the frond and not eat them. I find the leaves lying on the ground and only the stems left. Looks like it would if you used your hands to strip the frond. In fact I would suspect kids of doing it but there haven't been any kids in the yard since they would have to come through the house or scramble through the brush on the other side to jump the fence. I figure if they did that they would do more damage than just the fern.

Ok then this is pretty baffling...how about the slugs get there first and then the other unknown critter comes along and peels them off the plant, leaves and all!! lol!! Sorry - again!! :-)
