I have a bunch of sweet potato vine tubers.
How should I store them over the winter?
Will they produce eyes like seed potatos?
If so, do I plant them in the spring like a regular potato?
Thanks in advance
Paul
Sweet Potato Vine Tubers
paul... I want to know, also. I was told we could store the tubers just like any other tubers... no other info.
there was a long thread about these last year. I'll see if I can find it.
Here's the thread http://davesgarden.com/t/165606/sweet%20potato%20vine
I started mine after all that in water. put 3 toothpicks to hold it with just about 1" in the water, you can usually see a few fine roots on one end, put that in the water. I got several hundred !!! starts off of 5 potatoes. they wouldn't stop, I finally had to throw them away with sprouts on them. once the sprout was about 3" long, I'd slice it off with just a tiny bit of potato and move to another glass of water. they get roots real fast. I stored mine in a cool room just sitting in a metal pot where I tossed them. some people store them in dry peat moss.
Kinda like a regular potato?
I know we did sweet potatoes when I was a kid like this. never grown a real potato (except in the compost pile:)
Thanks everyone.
Paul
if you start cuttings of sweet potato vines like Blackie etc do they eventually form a tuber?
joydie
yes they will
thanks Paul!
I put mine in a glass of water last spring and I'm STILL getting shoots off it!
CC, they do go forever, don't they?? I finally had to close my eyes and throw it in the trash, cause I couldn't possibly use any more vines!
LOL!
I just hope the variegated one I got from Logees does as much....
