Big Beetle

I found a dead beetle yesterday. Its almost round, about half an inch in length and reminds me of Alexi Sayle in the early-mid 80's. Typically black with a violet/green oil sheen on the case.

Anyone know what it is?

It is, in fact, Alexi in person....... fat and greasy ;-)

Don't know who Alexi Sayle is but...

You've got an archetypal scarab there. Dung Beetle. Dor Beetle?

LOL Wintermoor.

Wow that's the very chappie! Thanks Lophophora. I had no idea we had dung beetles in the UK. I was out stag beetle hunting at the time.

I didn't pick him up because he might have woken up and chewed my leg off or something *G*. I'll take a container and see if he's still in situ tomorrow.

I never knew we had Dung Beetles until last year. I brought it the zoology department of our museum cos I thought it was a rarity.

I'm totally lost now because I haven't watched BB3 LOL

He wasn't there today :( Neither were any Stag Beetles! I know they are about this year because I've seen them in the garden. Now I know we have Dung Beetles I'll keep a close eye out for them.

oooh, put your claws away folks, poor P.J.!! sounds about right for Jade thaough :-)
I've never seen a stag beetle in my garden, even though I have rotting logs ,and lots of hidey holes all over. Perhaps I'm not looking in the right place.

Well MARK! They're the number one preferred food of serotines. Noctules luvvem and should think leisler's put a fair few away too.
(Dung beetles not Alexei Sayles)

I've also seen noctules and serotines munching on a hatching of stag beetles - i'm not sure what the Peoples' Trust for Endangered Species would have to say about that.
Two ES eating another LOL!!
