A couple of days ago I found some plants growing the the woods behind my house. They have yellow flowers. Their leaves are the same shape as violets, but they are lighter green, and sort of waxy. Please e-mail if you know what plant it is. sammiandfargo@aol.com
SOLVED: found a plant with yellow flowers
It could be a yellow flowered violet, Viola oderata 'Sulphurea' has yellow flowers as does Viola glabella, these are by no means the only yellow violets about.
Debby
What shape are the flowers? It could be Lesser Celandine (Ranunculus ficaria), which has shiny yellow starry flowers and the leaves grow in a rosette. There's a photo here:

It sounds very like a yellow violet. There are several native yellow violets: V. pennsylvanica (smooth yellow violet),V. pubescens (hairy yellow violet), and V. rotundifolia (round leaved violet) all occur in the northeast. It is likely, V. pennsylvanica if it has stemmed flowers. If the flowers are close to the leaves (stemless), it is V. rotundifolia. there are also 2 species, V. triparitia that is a southern and western species and V. nuttalli that is a prairie species.
