My lavender's new foliage is just riddled with little pockmarks from these darned bugs. The insects have red heads, a bit of black, then more red. They're a little over 1/10" long. They're fast, too. Are they nymphs to the boxelder bug? They're so tiny! Here at this http://davesgarden.com/journal/si/6630.html is a picture of the bug, squashed but still fairly clear. ;)

Red bugs noshing on my lavender's leaves
Bumping thread back up. The bugs seem to be gone and the lavendar's doing great...But can anyone ID the little devil who did this to my plant?
Kim, the bug you described could have been baby box elder bugs. Aphids and thrips will also attack lavender.
Oh - box elder bugs! Of course! I usually only see the nymphs when they're bigger and the black and red markings are more pronounced. I bet that's what they were. Glad they packed up and moved on!
