Using fans on seedlings

Saint Helen, MI(Zone 5a)

Has anyone ever heard of putting a fan on seedlings? I heard that doing so increases the diameter of the seedling's stem and keeps them from getting tall and lanky.
Any one else heard of that? Anyone tried it?

Wentworth, SD(Zone 4a)

I have heard of using fans. It is supposed to produce a stronger plant and have less problems with damping off I think. I don't know much about it though. The only fan that I had on when my plants were growing last year was a ceiling fan.

I put a small fan on my seedlings as soon as they get 2 sets of true leaves. I set it on low and use the rotating option so it dosen't blow constantly in the same direction.
It seems to keep disease down more than anything else, but I suppose my plants are stronger when I go to harden them off.

I read that having a light breeze over tomato seedlings helps make them sturdier. This is suppose to lessen the stress on the plant during the hardening off period.

A small fan from seed start helps reduce damp-off.
