Clematis Durandiihaircut?

I got a Durandii clematis last year and wacked it back in the fall. Did I do the right thing>Don;t know if its a 1,2,or 3 type

You have not harmed the plant at all. You merely removed all the dead stems! This is a shrubby clematis so is not treated in the same way as others. Check this out :-

thanks louisa! Was suprised that they listed it as hard to find... since jacksons and Perkins always seems to have it every year. But. it DOES need staking. And I did have to tie it up. but. since half my garden is held together with twine,I really never even paid attention. I only got 1 flower on it last year. It was its first Spring... Thanks for the heplful info.
