How do you propagate Norwalk pines?

Kingsville, OH(Zone 5a)

Hi;
I have a Norwalk Pine that is almost 4 foot tall, it has an other branch coming up from the roots that is over a foot tall. I tried when I repotted it to devide it but no luck. Any idea on rooting it???

Tom,
Most propagation of your type of
tree is by seed. Rooting is difficult
and a real challenge. It is a prefered
tree for grafting though.
If you however are up to the REALLY
BIG & TIME CONSUMING challenge here is
what to do. Be aware if this does not
try your patience it will be because
you have tons of patience.

*Take an angled cutting and dip the
wounded end into some warm (not hot)
water, being sure to remove all shoots
and leaves 6 inches at the base.
*Dip the wet tip into some powdered
growth hormone, up to 6 inches along
the wettened end.
*In a mixture of pearl lite and good
black soil plant the treated end into
the soil and stake it well.
*Keep moist and be sure it gets BRIGHT
LIGHT.
*It takes a while before rooting will
occur. But you will see new growth
as the indication that the rooting
has begun good.
*Now you may have NO problem with it,
but chances are, you may. SO.......
*If you see side shoots begining to
take over and the tree growing side-
ways instead of vertical. Wrap the
branches upward against the tree
trunk loosely with string.
*Once the tree seems to be growing
vertical unwrap the limbs.
***Keep an eye on it to be
sure the problem does not reoccur.
*If it does, you can side prune a "little",
but do not top prune.
***If again it continues, rewrap for a
season or two and restake on a more permanent
level.
*After the first year, it should begin to
do better and the attention it will need
should be less & less.
Hope this helps.
If you do it, let us know how it fairs.

Any other problems you may run into
with it just e-mail me at (mygarden@moment.net)
and I will try to help.
P.S. Woops I almost forgot.
Be sure to use a GOOD wound
sealer on the tree you take the
cutting from so as not to leave
it open to disease and cause it
to sapp.
