spots on tomatoes

What causes hard white or colorless spots around the outside of tomatoes?

Any ideas?

could be slugs eating on them

Well, I think I've solved it after all. This type of damage is done by stinkbugs. They insert their mouth parts (ugh!) below the tomato skin and suck out the tomato sap. The empty cells creat a hard, colorless spot. While the tomato doesn't look very good, it's still edible.

Thanks, Oblambert, for your response.
