texas umbrella tree seeds
Eyes, do you know the botanical name? There is a tree called Parasol Tree, Firmiana simplex, but I don't know of an umbrella tree.
....it's a hard, hazelnut looking seed...the pkg. said blue....I presume that would be the bloom color..and full sun....that's all I have on it...I'll look up the Parasol tree and see if it looks akin....thanks, Aimee.

Eyes, I hate them, too, but the blooms smell great. I found the Magnolia tripetala, called just "umbrella tree" in my book, and came back to post about it. But it has white flowers and red fruits. Well, you can feed the seeds to the squirrels. Did you find what you wanted to know about mahonia? I looked it up, and was surprised to note that it can grow all the way from 12" to 15'.
here's the url for Magnolia tripetala http://www.floridata.com/ref/M/magn_tri.cfm http://www.arborquest.com/SPdetail.cfm?sp=MATRAA
edited to add mahonia sites http://www.arborquest.com/PLresult.cfm

MaVie, I knew you would be here when I got back. Thanks for covering for your scanner-deprived friend. I have books with information, but no way to upload it. Looking up sites being your specialty, I am spoiled to having you come along and find where I left it unfinished.

Back to that magnolia vine, it said it gives energy, didn't it? It's so good to have you back on, I thought you were going to vacation forever.
yeah, and there were other sites that sells them as herbs too. almost like the pau d'arco, gives one extra peps for one's health.
