First of all, I recently received a few Higan Cherry tree seeds and the germination instructions say to stratify them. Being new at this, can someone please tell me the correct way to stratify these seeds? Do they need to be nicked first? Also, has anyone had experience with either this (Higan Cherry) or with an apple tree called "Scarlet Surprise"? Ooops, I guess that's three questions. But any information would be greatly appreciated.
Two questions ...
HeadPlant, did the seed pkg tell you how long to stratify them?
Terri
Yes, for 1 to 1 1/2 months.
Prunus subhirtella AKA Higan Cherry : Requires 2 to 3 month moist cold treatment @ 40F then sow at 70F . Check regularly for sprouting . Cuttings taken in late summer rooted 90% in a sand / peat medium in 7 weeks without root hormone applied . Apparently there is great variance in the appearance of each seedling . Good Luck !!
