Damage to 20 year old Viburnum

Princeton, NJ

20 year old plus now 15 foot Viburnum. Much remains seemingly healthy but this winter resulted in multiple major branches looking like this.

I've seen this type of damage on Redbuds, and young Maples. I don't think it is from Viburnum borer or fungus. I think it may be from the weather, and going through Winter - extreme drought and heat followed by prolonged cold. Sort of like sun scald. Before Winter, make sure to give shrubs and trees a good, long drink, to protect from Winter extremes.

Thank you so much. Last year here in 6b we had an extreme summer ---weeks of 100. Followed by a warm winter. Sometimes it is easy to overlook watering long established shrubs for an avid not master gardener. Thanks again
