Calling England...

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

My mom and dad lived in England in 1954 & 55. They lived in a place called 'Lincolnshire' (Skegness) and in Herne Bay near Dovers. Does anyone live around that area? Thanks, Lisa

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Lisa - I lived about 2 hours from Skegness (Skeggy as we use to call it) before I came over here. I knew it well!

Hello Lisa.
Skeggy isn't too far from here and we often go to that area when the weather's not too bad. In the Uk we say that the west coast is best for swimming since the Gulf Stream keeps the sea temps up but the east coast is best for beaches since the body of the country protects the sunbathers from the prevailing westerlies. Less rain on the east but colder sea : take your pick. I am originally a southerner so I know Herne Bay reasonably well although we always thought of Kent as a lesser attraction to Sussex and other counties with better beaches or more lively attractions.
Anything you need to know or want to find out about ?

Louisa - are you Yorkshire born ? 2 hours travel isn't a lot miles wise if you're not on motorways.

Yes spikeyjo, thanks for asking. My mom & dad became friends with a couple that lived in Kent. They kept in touch for a long time, but over the years they have lost touch. (Dad is no longer living, but mom is) Are there alot of family names of 'Hughes' in Kent? Are you close to Kent?

No Jo, louisa from the good countys, Anglia, were the best of us come from, lol.

Lisa, Jo lives in yorkshire, thats not close to anywhere, its the biggest county in the UK, people go there to hide, i know our country is small, but its not that bloody small, it not like knowing everyone in the village, kent is one of the big county too, and there are thousands of hughes, you may have to narrow it down just a bit, lol.

Jo, if you have been swimming in the sea at skeggy, no wonder you chose the name spikey, must be the iceicles, lol.

Alan, thanks! I know it is big over there and it is a long shot, but when I told mom I had was talking to folks from England her eyes got big with excitement. She is old and I told her I'd see what I could do! Lisa

Hello Lisa! There's probably some kind of local newspaper for these areas. Some of them carry letters, or small titbits about people trying to contact people they knew long ago. If there is a local paper you might even be able to email it. Just a thought if you've a few minutes to spare at your computer. Good luck!

Thanks a bunch Louisa! Now, if you could tell me--is Kent south? Thanks, Lisa

Lisa, if you have an Atlas, look for London, Kent is south east of London, do you have the name of a town or area in Kent, that will help a bit, we maybe able to throw some info your way.

Alan.

Norwich, Norfolk, United Kingdom

I don't live far from Lincolnshire about an hour and half away. I take a trip out there in the autumn to buy my bulbs. Loads of specialist bulb centres there you see.

Jo, no I was not born in Yorkshire. I lived on the Suffolk/Norfolk border in Cambridgershire.

See shes from the best place on earth, thats why she is so nice.

>>>>do you have the name of a town or area in Kent, that will help a bit,<<<<
the name of the town in Kent would be Herne Bay. Does that help? The family I am looking for is the Percival Hughes family. Lisa

Lisa, a few years ago I was trying to locate one of my ancestors names to see if there were any left in the area. I wrote the library in the town of Hawick, Scot. Few weeks later, I heard from the librarian who copied all the Tait's in the telephone book along with the addresses. So that might be something to try, if you don't mind writing people. Good luck! Thank you Doris, I would really like to find out something for mom. She would be so happy. Lisa

Alan, I didn't go to Yorkshire to hide from anything, I visited friends and fell in love with the place and the warmth from the people on the street - the fact that people still say 'good morning' etc to each other and gents hold the door open for you. I haven't seen a single whippet yet either... As for choosing the name Spikey, well that's a whole other story - let's just say I bristle easily (but not on a forum since I can just turn it off, unlike people sadly). Anyway, just because I'm not from the flatlands doesn't mean I don't try to be nice too (sulk).
Lisa - I'm so pleased to hear that yr mum is enjoying this I think we should all try our best for you now. Can you find out if Percival Hughes had any children and what their names were, does she remember roughly where in herne bay they lived, was it near the sea or inland, west or east, perhaps a street name ? What did Percival do for a living ? Anything else you can find out ?
I'm away for the weekend but I'll try and check in asap.

Sure thing - but I really should have left already - the trouble is I'm becoming addicted !

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

LOL! Me too, should have been off here a half hour ago!I'll get with you when you return. I'll email Sunday. Lisa

jo, are are you off to the smoke for the weekend ?.

Alan.

Alan, sorry I'd already left before you posted :(

No, I didn't get off to the City although I try to as much as poss. This weekend was taken up with family, shopping, school runs and (wait for it) gardening ! That's why it snowed on Sunday.

So anyway this morning's the first chance to get back on screen.
