What went wrong with my aspidistra?

Greenville, NC(Zone 8b)

I purchased it at a Plant Sale at the county arboretum just over a month ago. Now, I know these plants are not supposed to be coddled because they are susceptible to sunburn and root rot; therefore, I placed it out of direct sunlight and, instead of a regular watering schedule like my other houseplants, I checked the moisture levels periodically and only watered when needed.

The one leaf it had when I purchased it is slowly turning brown. I know that individual leaves die after a while, but I don't see any signs of new leaves. I can't think what went wrong except that it got direct sun during the hour or so that it took me to transport it home. Is that enough to damage it?

What do you think? Is there hope for this aspidistra? Did I make a mistake? Was it a dud to begin with?

Aspidistra are susceptible to spider mites. Take 2 paper towels & wet them. Put a drop of dish soap on 1 & rub together so both towels are suds. Spread them out 1 in each hand, place 1 towel on top & 1 on bottom of leaf& starting @ base gently wipe up. Look @ the towels if they're yellow green looking it's spider mites. Easy to kill. You also might be watering it more than you think
