This has been slow growing along a fence in Virginia. Deciduous with red fall foliage. I wasn’t sure if this is a native or not .
ID Shrub
Hi Aceae1:
That is a Euonymus alatus seedling - Burning Bush - which is an exceedingly common landscape shrub in the eastern US. It also is known to seed itself into natural and unmanaged areas, becoming a noxious invasive species.
It looks nothing like any E.a./ burning bush i have seen which have small wide leaves, although of course they do get red in fall. Perhaps there is significant difference with immature stage.
Hi AAgeorge:
I suspect it would be very easy for you to find young E. a. seedlings all over unmanaged areas of MD where mature E. a. exist in landscapes - and you can see for yourself how well they match up with the images provided.
Size of individual leaves is governed by many things, including whether they emerged from dormant buds or whether they are formed on new stem growth extensions during the growing season. Fertility, moisture regime, pruning habits - all these can produce differences in the exact size of any one leaf on a plant.
Look for other characteristics of a plant - besides solely leaf and size - to fully evaluate that plant's identity.
