A former boss in 2011 was telling me about a hard green tree fruit that looks like a fig, but it’s not a fig. It was not at that garden. Here in northern New Jersey, zone 6, I am living at a new property. Thank you so much for sharing your ID skills!!

Cut it in half so we can see the inside. Does look like a fig and figs grow in NJ.

Must be Aesculus flava which grows in New Jersey.

Had you cut it open, its ID would have been discovered.
Here is the fruit of the Aesculus that grows in my state, Aesculus californica. Very similar.
