Help with gardenia cuttings

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

My sister has this mature gardenia bush in her yard that produces large pretty blooms. I happen to be over there last spring (March) so I collected 3 good cuttings of new growth sprigs. When I got home I put them in water and finally they are growing roots. As it is now almost September (yea, it took them that long to grow some roots) I was wandering how to best transplant them into soil giving them the best chance to survive? I ask because I already tried to do that with one and it didn't last a day despite me keeping the soil moist.

Thanks in advance for any advice offered.
