Hi,
I'm working on a cottage/perennial garden.
I'm loving layers, from shortest (front of bed) to tallest. (back of bed)
Short formal boxwood hedge
Tulips
Amazing Daisy May
Liatris Spicata (Kobold)
Looking to fill in some of the liatris with a 2-3ft upright pink flower. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Zone 6 - Upright Showy Bloom - Perennial
A personal favorite is hardy geranium such as the native Geranium maculatum (~2’ with lilac to pink blooms).
Peony cultivars
Perennial Phlox
Echinacea purpurea
Japanese Anemone
Or old fashioned short lived perrenials with long bloom periods such as carnations and snapdragons. From experience with my cottage garden, adding a few reseeding annuals will provide space fillers and reduce maintenance work of a perrenial garden. Pink cosmos, cleome and zinnias are some of my favorites.
Regarding the anemone recommendation, I planted both japonica and canadensis in my 7b sandy soil, and within 2 yrs it had spread wildly so I dug all of it out. I do like the flower so I saved a few of each in pots to see whether might perform satisfactorily.
