Hi, I live in PA zone 5a. What could I plant in a flowerpot in the way of a Summer annual vine for a 6 foot trellis? I've tried Morning glories, but they don't start making flowers until very late in the season. I need something that grows and flowers fast and will tolerate slightly cooler temperatures. Thanks
Fast growing Summer annual vine for a 6 foot trellis
Try scarlet runner beans aka Phaseolus coccineus which are from higher elevations and prefer cooler weather. They have copious amounts of red flowers that attract hummingbirds, butterflies and moths and produce edible beans. The leaves are more dense and lush than morning glories. Seed is easily saved. I have grown them to cover an arbor but they do better further north.
You might end up running into a similar problem with Cardinal Vine (Ipomoea × multifida) since it's related to the Morning Glory, but the leaves are so wonderful I never mind that they take a while to bloom. You could also try starting the seeds earlier indoors to give it a jump start.
