Have a problem finding a solution. Have an area on the SE corner of the lot, Behind it is a 6' fence on two sides (the corner) and a neighbor's apple tree on the S side. Near Sacramento, zone 9. In the fall, winter and spring the area is in total shade all day from the fence. Then about June 1 - August 15 when the sun moves north, it is in the sun all afternoon. Looking for a shrub that can fill the 8 x 8 area +/- that can tolerate those conditions. We get to 110 F here in summer and 20 - 25 F some winters. Tried a sun camellia this year and once the all day sun hit it, it went poof instantly and burned to the ground almost. Had a crape myrtle in there for six to ten years - it was too lanky and leaning from all the shade in spring. When the house was new 40 years ago they put in a fruitless mulberry that did Ok because it got up to size quickly and found sun above the fence but the roots were damaging things so it had to come out. Can't find anything that seems to tolerate these conditions. Any ideas?

Have you looked at hybrid musk roses? I put in several. I find Ballerina to be quite wonderful. I put three under a tree and they get only about 4 hours of light. If not Ballerina, there are several others that would work.
Here is Ballerina:

And here is where you can get it - it's where I got mine:

I have been putting in lots of hybrid musk roses. They come in many colors. I think they may beautifully solve your problem.
