earthworm behavior

Wayland, MA

I thought I had already posted this, but don't see it on the website. So here it is again:
Does anyone know why earthworms come to the surface when the soil is disturbed? I have been weeding my lawn (getting out ground ivy), and I noticed that they come up and move along the surface of the lawn. Maybe trying to avoid digging predators? But then they are fodder for the robins. I would have guessed they would try to move deeper, but maybe they can't do it fast enough. Just curious.
