Tetrapanax papyrifer \'steroidal giant\' air layer

TACOMA, WA(Zone 8b)

Has anyone ever successfully air layered Tetrapanax papyrifer on older wood (toward the base)? Yes, I'm aware that these are easy to propagate from suckers, however it takes years to grow a tall stem to get the palm tree effect. I have two in a garden that I want to air layer for another location while leaving the establish rootstock in place so they grow back quickly. They are about 3 to 4 ft tall. I tried this once in the past a similar type of single stem plant and removing a ring of bark ended up killing the rootstock. I'm just curious if anyone has propagated this plant this way. I found that it works great for scheffleras, which have a similar growth pattern but only if there is more than one stem.

Thanks
