Please ID this pretty flower

Roslyn, United States

Can someone tell me what kind of flower this is? It puts out pod like fuzzy seeds.

Butterfly weed - Asclepias tuberosa.

hmm. Maybe. I looked it up and it is similar but the Asclepias tuberosa has a more solid sturdier flower. This flower is growing in NY. Do you know if it is easy to grow from the seeds of the fuzzy pods?

Another possibility is Asclepias curassavica (Tropical Milkweed) which can be grown as an annual in New York. In either case, milkweed should be fairly easy to start from the seeds of ripe pods.

Okay I looked at the photos closer and it is not A. tuberosa. It is A. curassavica which is an annual for regions that are colder than the semi-tropics. A common name is tropical milkweed.

It is fairly easy to grow from seed. Just be warned you will have to do this every year because I've never seen seeds come back from winter. Sometimes it is easier to buy the already growing and blooming.
