Ammonia!!!

CREZIERES, France(Zone 8a)

I have been sowing seeds from a seed swap and using a variety of methods, including Norman Deno's celebrated 'paper towels' method.
Some successes, some little problems, but I was staggered and not entirely pleased to find that when I examined the seeds of Orlaya grandiflora after a week or so, there was a dreadful smell of ammonia in the plastic bag.
It is only that species does anyone know why this happens?

they are rotting. don't know why, maybe a contaminant on the seed coat?

Oh dear. Thanks for letting me know.
