Hello: I am a novice seeking advice from any fig tree enthusiasts regarding my tree "Celeste".
She was planted approximately 4 years ago.
Year 1: Grew quite large-no fruit-not wrapped -died over winter.
Year 2-New growth-grew to 4'-no fruit-wrapped for winter but water got in and plant died. Renewed growth over summer- but no fruit.
Year 3-Had been wrapped successfully--but unusual frost killed plant after uncovered. New growth to 5'-no fruit-wrapped after all the leaves fell off.
Year 4-Successfully unwrapped in Spring-plant grew to 6', vibrant plant. No fruit--but this year has "nubs" on 4-5 branch tops.
I live in the Northeast and am including photos of the plant taken today. Are these "nubs" fruit that will not mature at this point in time? Should this be pruned, wrapped, unwrapped? Hoping for some figs ;-)
Appreciate any help!

Need Fig Tree advice ;(
I don't know anything about fig trees but started growing one this spring. It did fine all summer. It is supposed to be hardy to zone 6 which is my zone.
I wonder what zone you are in?
My brother, zone 7 has grown figs for about four or five years and is getting figs. I will try to remember to show him this post and ask him about your question.
Good Luck.
Your nubs are not fruit. This summer has been cold and figs like heat and some humidity. Would have to research more about that var, but figs like to grow as close to southern exposures and walls more than as an independent bush. There are figs that seem to be ornamental only and never produce.
Hi:
Thanks for the replies!
I am zone 6b and the plant is on the southern side of my yard.
Did you have fruit on yours Birder, and will you be wrapping for winter?
I know Celeste is not an ornamental.
Am confused about pruning, too.
You are in Ct. Wrap your fig. If, in the south we happen to prune, it's usually to take the canes to the ground. Realize I am in zone 8b, you are in zone 6. Zone 6 is the most northern zone you can expect the fig to grow. Root damage on a fig can damage the plant, so protect the roots- do not disturb them unless absolutely necessary as this can set the canes back. Birder? Mo gets a bit of snow and ice- do you wrap your canes or allow them to regrow each spring from the gound?
Kittriana,
This is the first year I have had the little fig. I was unaware the fig needed to be wrapped. The tag said it would grow in zone 6. I'm in zone 6b--does that help?? We really get very little of either. I will probably take my chances as I am a little on the lazy side. (hurts a little to admit that!) :) I will mulch it well.
Chuckl, watched my mom wrap a willow twig in Dallas one winter- she used old towels and stretch wrap(it survived that first winter). I KNOW fig canes can survive a bit of snow in southern Oklahoma (Ardmore), but ice/wind can kill them. Cross your fingers, and hope its a mild winter for its first winter in the ground.
My brother, in zone 7a doesn't wrap his. He's getting plenty of fruits and doesn't wrap his. Ardmore, Okla. is zone 7b.
