Brugmansia

kawartha lakes, Canada

I started with 4 sticks last fall, today I have 8 beautiful plants. I read that these can be started from seed, but when I look inside the flower, there are no seeds, nor when the flowers drop off.

I am happy to start more cuttings but I wonder what others do.

Thanks, from a newbie

The flowers have to be pollinated either by you or by an insect. If all your plants are from cuttings from same mother plant, it will not work. They are self sterile. You need 2 different plants with different genetics to get a seed pod. It is fun to cross pollinate 2 different colors. You never know what you will get. Each seed will produce a genetically different plant so then they can be successfully crossed.

So you can never replicate a brug by seeds from it, only by cuttings.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I think all the cuttings were from the same plant. That explains why I could not find any seeds.

Get another and you can cross them. The seeds come in big pods that you cannot miss, in varying shapes a bit depending on kind of brug. It takes them around 4 months or so to ripen. The seeds inside go from immature white to mature, viable brown.

The pod in the first picture to the left is splitting, it is ripe. The seeds have a brown cork around them that you can peel off. This makes for faster and easier germination.

Thanks Kell for that info. I don't think I can buy Brugs here in Ontario.

Do you have any links to suppliers?

Do you have eBay there? Lots on sale here. This time of year, people are cutting their brugs back so sell them.

I googled and got this list. Could be some are still current. Most are probably online sales,

Go onto Facebook, there are several brugmansia groups there, including Brugmansia Canada, Brugmansia and Datura World, Brugmansia USA, Brugmansia Lovers Unite, BrugsNStuff. There are growers who trade and sell cuttings and occasionally seeds from crosses they are hybridizing. Please join us, we post lots of pictures. Minga Dotson
