USA as stated is a Rose Our state flower is the California poppy.

England's national flower is the Rose, Scotlands flower is the Thistle, Ireland's flower is the Shamrock and Wales has the Daffodil and the Leek as national emblems.

Gilmer, TX

Jianhua, The bluebonnet is a small flower, usually not over 6 inches, at least in the part of the state where I live. They are a wildflower but have been hybridized. We even have Aggie bluebonnets, the maroon ones. I'm sure before long we will also have longhorn ones; they will be orange. They will self seed and come back every year. The hill country is esp. beautiful where you can see acres and acres of them growing in the early spring. Most often in the wild they will be accompanied by Indian Paintbrushes, a beautiful orange flower. I would be glad to send you seeds. I can just zerox your address label and send them on. Pam

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Jianhua-The Blue Bonnets, Sweet peas and Lupines are all members of the Legume or pea family of which there are over 200 species. Just like the members of any very large family they vary widely. Some are ornamental and some are food crops. The Sweet peas like cool conditions, while another member , for example, the cowpea or blackeyed pea is a food crop from Africa that likes hot, dry conditions. I do not grow Blue Bonnets because they look much better in large masses.

hello dear gardening Pals,
excited to get your resonses.thanks!
To t i G:yeah, east or west, roses are among the best,i feel.in my region, many farmers cultivate roses not for cuttings, but for practical uses--to refine rose oil which is used in food and cosmetics industries.i know of a gardener who grafts mini-roses on giant rose trees.wow,so hundreds of'seven sisters' on the trees--fantasic.planning to have a try next spring.chinese rose has some features.to put it simply, flowers, strongly scented;foliage, less small,no waxy light;stems, more prickles.wonder what features your Cherokee rose has? Thanks!

To Evert:hello, little brother.thanks very much for taking much time to provide us your nation flower, tree and city flowers.though you are only a teenager, yet you know much about gardening.i think your parents must be proud of you.take care of not letting your girlfriends tear you into pieces.(just kidding)

Zanymuse:i have never been to America.but i know that your state is famous for gold.so California poppy must be a golden poppy.yeah,Americans like roses, from the 'love' stamps i can see it.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

here's a link to the Cherokee rose. It's gorgeous. I had one cutting but it didn't make it, I didn't know what I was doing.

Baa:my students ask me what's the difference of these three words-UK,England and Britain.i've no idea about them.so i ask you for help.
Catlady ,Nefer and MavieRose:thanks for the info .
One thing i want to have a mention.that every nation has one or two flowers as their nation flower(s)must have a solid background.when discussing about them, we should not compare one nation's flower with another nation's--saying ours is good and yours is bad.since God created man equally,i think ,flowers should be regarded equally too.

Jianhua

There seems to be a lot of confusion outside of the UK about this matter.

England is a country within the Island of Great Britain. Great Britain contains 3 main countries, Wales, Scotland and England, several smaller islands also belong to the main Island of Great Britain.

The United Kingdom is the Island of Great Britain and the 6 counties which make up what we call Northern Ireland and the full title is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

It is often thought that Southern Ireland is part of the U.K but the Republic of Ireland is exactly that, a Republic and in no way under British rule.

I hope that helps.

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

Baa:a great help to me and to many friends outside the UK.not so long ago, i sent a seed letter to Ireland.i don't know whether it is Northern Ireland or Republic of Ireland.so i simply wrote...Ireland,UK.wonder if it will reach the receiver safe and sound.

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Jianhua, you sent me some Rosa chinensis seeds... are they hard to grow? You wrote, there's three different types' seeds in the packet.. thought to try them next year.

Does anyone have seeds of rose, called Rose bengalensis?

I'm also looking for red-leaved rose, it is very pretty. But also I like our Karelian rose and Rosa canina, which is native here.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

In Canada we have provinces..like a state in the U.S.
I live in Ontario..and our provincial flower is a Trillium. They grow in forests and you must not pick them..

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

Evert:answer your first question.you'd better bury the seeds in damp sand till next spring.when earth comes back to life, take them out and sow in the earth.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

LOL Jianhua you are funny~

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I love collect the Stamps~

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

(((((((((((((Evert))))))))))))
Redrose:promise to send you soon the chinese rose stamps.two red ones(1984,1990)and a yellow one (1997)
***about nation flower--a flower is chosen as a nation flower,i think, it should consist of the following elements:
1.it is native to the nation.
2.it is cultivated for a long time by the people.
3.it has high quality and ornamental value.
4.it is loved by the majority of the people.
5.it has rich national features and are closely connected
with the traditional cultures and arts.
6.it has some practical value.
flowers are the essence of the great nature, and the nation flowers are the essence of the essences.so i'd like to share with gardening friends from all the nations on this globe.due to the gaps of different cultures, sometimes there might be a little misunderstanding.we should try to bridge over the gaps.let's learn from each other!!

national symbols of the Philippines --> http://www.123independenceday.com/philippines/national/symbols/

Sampaguita (Jasminium sambac) (Family Oleaceae) is the national flower of the PHilippines. other flowers prominent in the Philippines --> http://www.dipolog.org/Flowers.htm

"down the Shore", NJ(Zone 7a)

Jianhua, the USA National Flower is just "The Rose", but is usually depicted as a Red Hybrid Tea. There was a movement before a National Flower was chosen to select the Marigold (Tagetes), as being easily grown in all 50 states. This was defeated, and the Rose was chosen.

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

MavieRose:thanks so much for what you have done and are doing for us.your links of the nation flower of the Philippines is really a treat!
PS.the chinese healthcare tea peas--Cassia tora is ready for you.will send to you soon.take care.Jianhua

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

Starzz:i have looked up your provincial flower Trillium, but not yet found any solutions.would you be good enough to give us a brief about it?

This message was edited Monday, Nov 26th 10:00 AM

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

pardancanda:thanks.yeah, the Hybrid Tea Roses is a huge branch of the rose family.it is said that there are thousands of varieties so far in the world.and their colors can almost form a complete chromatogram.the red rose you mentioned above and the yellow peace belong to HTR.
the marigold's failing to be chosen as your nation flower,i feel,(in fact i have no right to give any comments about yours, here just have it as a chat)is a little pity
because it is so widely cultivated (all 50 states).since your have two Parties, why not have two nation flowers--woody one, rose;herbial one, marigold.thus it might have the majority get their wishes.as i know there are quite a few countries have two nation-flowers
talking about nation flowers,China has met the similar problems.according to a report, since 1982,discussions are going on without stopping on which kind of flower should be take as the nation flower.but till now,the final settlement
has not taken.there are mainly three suggestions.1.plum as nation flower.2.plum and peony as nation flowers 3.spring,peony;summer,lotus;autumn,chrysanthemum;winter,plum.now it is almost certain that the second suggestion (i.e.plum and peony as nation flowers) will be taken.

Jianhua..I don't know much about the Trillium..except that I have seen them in the forests and know that they are protected.
This article explains why.

Hope it helps.
Cheers Carol

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

Starzz:thanks so much for the link.the trillium is really an eye-opener.Fine! three leaves;three petals;and three sepals. ):
Nowadays in China some wild plant resources have been destroyed in some extent.you know China is famous for Bonsai.but having a fine one will take at least five or more years.so the fast and easy path is to go to mountains and dig tree stumps and then put them in planters.after a year or two's cultivating and grafting, they will become a fine Bonsai.i think the way of 'killing a hen in order to get eggs'is not agreeable.now many gardeners and experts have realized that, and are taking some practical methods to protecting the precious wild plant resources.

Cristina...Those are so beautiful, do you get snow ??? they look tropical......so pretty...

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Cristina, those are gorgeous!!

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

DearGardener and tiG:a good'un--thinking the flowers are yummy too.
Cristina:these flowers are beautiful, but the pumpkin seeds sent to me are more fantastic.they are four as big as the common ones in my region.i am dreaming to have them grow big to bigger to biggest...heheh you are living in the south hemisphere,we all want to know what the weather is like there.a favor, please.~

Temuco, Chile(Zone 9b)

Hello,Wantabegardener, tiG , Jianhua and everyone , yes the weather is a bit cool where I'm, but remember Chile is very long country, so it has very tropical and hot climate in the north, to very cold and snowy in the south.

Down south in Temuco, in winter the minimun goes from 1 - 3 oC and maximun 11 - 13 oC. and in summer, minimun is from 8 - 10 oC. to 27 - 30 oC. Only sometimes does it snow were I live, but about 44 Km to the east does it snow heavily during winter.

There are lots of microclimate zones around here and there are lots of beautiful wildflowers, but nobody collects them.
The situation with the copihues (lapagerias) is a bit worse, because they cannot be cultivated by us (white people), only indigenous people (mapuche and pehuenche indians) can market them (political arrangements with the Government), but many people have them in their gardens and they got away by saying that birds disseminates the seeds......otherwise they contemplate prosecution.

Well, I'm planning to see if I can collect some seeds and if I do, you will know!

cristina

Temuco, Chile(Zone 9b)

Jianhua, I forgot to remind you that because we are in the southern hemisphere, we're in the middle of spring ! so I'm putting in the ground many seeds that you, lovely people has traded with me.

I know Jianhua that you will have to share or sell part of the pumpkin, because they're really big, HUGE is a better word and so tasty that is unreal, because te seed are so big is a problem to trade them, but I still do.....

cristina

Jerome, MI(Zone 5b)

Thank you Cristina for answering....My BH..thought there was places that were hot and cold or north being Hotter, and south being colder...closer to south pole...The Lapagerias, Copihues: are so beautiful....Thanks for the information....Isn't this a great thread, Jianhua has started...we learn about all over the world....So nice...Thank you..
Wantabe.....
