twin ginkgos?

Two Rivers, WI

I have planted ginkgo tree seeds and think I have twins if that's possible. I was careful on the spacing of the seeds and since there large seeds I know they didn't stick together. Out of 100 seeds there the first to come up. Can anyone give me information on this? Is this common? Should I leave them alone or separate the two? I have read its rare to have both a male and a female tree. Is this how that happens?

I would probably separate them. The way I usually get rid of one is to just clip it off at the soil line, so the roots of the survivor are not disturbed.

Would it hurt it to leave the two? I am just fanisated by the gingko tree. And whatever new info I can get would be great

Well Ginkgos are normally grown as a single trunk tree, so trying to make it a double one in the long run is probably not a good idea (rot can start in the crack between them. Ginkgos can become full size forest trees, although it does not grow fast. It can take decades to bloom, apparently. But if you are just playing around, and it sounds like you have others, no problem with seeing what happens to your "twins".
Do Ginkgos survive in frosty WI? People grow them around here, I think they are beautiful and interesting too.
Here is a link to an interview with a Botanist who apparently wrote a whole book about the Ginkgo! Maybe you could get it out of the library, then report back what you have found out!

Darn! Because Ginkgos are really pre-something trees and do produce twin embryos.
