I saw this at La Brea Tar Pits: clusters of tubular red-orange flowers with lots of stamens, thorny branches.

Definitely a coral tree (Erythrina), maybe erythrina crista-galli. There are many coral trees in southern California, and they are beautiful. They produce bright red seeds that look like southern magnolia seeds.
