leggy tomatoes

Berkeley, CA(Zone 9a)

I began to germinate my tomatoes. One day they were just germinating and the next they were 3" tall. Any way to prevent this?

Lights are to far above them. 2" above soil at the most. This is true for any plants.

not enough strong lights or too far away

I agree light is too far away. The remedy is to repot them and bury them up to the cotyledons. The stems will root. Once you repot them, then you can put your lights closer, so it doesn't happen again. Good luck!

Yep. Too far from your light source. I start mine in a South facing windowsill and they do fine but if I start them in artificial light, I find that they need to be less than 8" from the source or they tend to be "leggy". There is still hope!!! Do as Whisper32 suggested and repot them up to the cotyledons, then give them lots of close light or a South windowsill. Good luck.

As posted above, if you are using regular shop lights, the lights need to be no more then 2" above the plants.
