Hi All,
First of all, sorry if this is in the wrong forum area...
I live in Malaysia. I have a roof garden where I am currently growing Bananas and pomegranates & ciku fruit trees. I also happen to live next to a forest (more like jungle) reserve area. Anyone have any humane ways of saving my fruits from the macaque monkeys? Last month they stole the pomegranate. Last week one tore off the 'heart' of one of my banana trees.
Monkey help
Maybe if you spray everything with hot pepper extract regularly they will be deterred.
Spraying's a good idea. What about wrapping the fruits?
Not a method I have tried. We have deer. It's a work in constant battle and pepper sprays havent worked on deer, or coon, or ants either for that matter. I wish you luck, I truly do.
I thought I had issues with critters until I read this post. Lol Mothballs might deter them but they are posinous so you can't let the monkeys get them. You can put the mothballs in a soda bottle poke holes in the side of the bottle, replace the top and hang it near your plants. The smell deters many animals. Just a thought.
Safe to say most of us have never seen a macaque in action. I am familiar with chimpanzees and highland gorillas having grown up with several. They all adore fruit. Isn't it traditional to make fruit prayer offerings to monkeys in your part of the world? This must make things more challenging for you. Would love to ssee photos of your roof garden.
Wow what a problem. I too want photos. All I could think about is a big cage, but that would cost a lot of $$$

This is a great idea! Will give it a try. I read somewhere that monkeys will never let go of things that are in their hands. Someone said to boil a potato and while its still hot, give it to the monkey. Seeing that they NEVER let go of what's in their hands, this will result in them burning their hands AND burning their mouths too. But I could never do this...rather have no fruits than causing harm to these sort of pests!

Too uninitiated to do the prayer! Will try to take pictures after work today. Bear in mind it's still a WIP as I am a one-year-plus-part-time-gardener / full time lecturer.

Will definitely try to take some pictures after work today.
By the way, I also get visits from Leaf Monkeys. They are the more desirable visitors as they just seem to sit around sunbathing totally uninterested in any of the fruits.

Have you tried talcum powder for ants? I had ants attacking the cat food (in the cat bowl). Sprinkling powder onto the plate (under the cat bowl) seems to have rid me of my ant problem. Might help with your issue, maybe not on the fruit but around the tree?
Great to see you posting again. All of our gardens are a WIP. LOL The one problem with using Hot Pepper spray is if it gets on their hands it can get in their eyes etc...they can do severe damage to themselves trying to get rid of the pain.
Unable to take pictures as it's been raining heavily in the evenings. Hopefully this weekend, if I can get up early enough, I'll snap some images of the roof garden.
On a side note, I saw a wild boar last night walking happily along the road. We live next (literally neighbours) to a rainforest jungle so I shouldn't be too surprised.

It's a dilemma, you want to protect & eventually harvest your fruits but you don't want to end up hurting animals in the process ... they are, after all, only looking to survive.
I am a native Floridian. Monkeys have never been a problem but introduced bird species are. It is not such a big problem for the hobbiest home grower who might be peeved but can afford to share. It's a huge problem for the farmer/commercial grower whose livelihood depends on the crop.
Wow what a beautiful garden! I guess if it is your home the only thing to do would be to make a big cage, attached to the rails and walls. But this might be an apartment building? In that case I think you are just going to have to give up on fruits, and enjoy the flowers.
Your garden is amazing! No wonder the monkeys love it.
Very beautiful! I sold my childhood home in South Florida last summer. We had many of the same trees. We had a hedge of Surinam cherries over one hundred feet long.

Thanks :)
It's not an apartment...I don't think I could bear it if the Roofgarden was in a big cage...I was just thinking I may have to resign myself to just flowers. But I suspect this will not deter the monkeys. I have seen them just 'hang about' tearing up flowers! We have a saying here ('Seperti Kera Mendapat Bunga') that roughly translates to "Like giving flowers to monkeys"!

Wow! 100 feet long! I'm sure the birds loved that! Any tips on caring for the tree?
We never gave them special care. They were maintained at five feet tall and were approximately four feet across. The gardener would prune them as a hedgerow each week. Yes, the birds like to nest and eat the fruit. Snakes like the birds and eggs. Turtles dig in the sandy soil below the shrubs to lay eggs. As kids, we used to have cherry bomb and rubberband sling fights with the ripe fruit. We didn't have snowballs. :)
Your garden is so containerized. It must be a lot of work to maintain such an organized collection in a warm climate.

That sounds really great!
It is a rooftop garden so it has to be containerised ... don't want roots breaking through my dad's study-room ceiling! It isn't that much work as the garden's style is quite organic and jungly. I just let them grow any way they like, pruning when things get too crazy. But they do require daily watering in the hot season, which I quite enjoy. My dad said soon I'm going to be looking for more garden space!
Here's a cherry haul and some Ciku's.
I wish I could share photos. I'm on a tablet but maybe if I check photos from the computer of my now gone home.
Beautiful cherries! Not like the cold weather types. One day they are bitter, the next sour, a day or two to enjoy and then they are rotten. There was a time in the development of South Florida that Surname cherry hedges divided almost every property line. They were brought there as a potential fruit preserve crop. But, their season is short, they have no shelf life, the product/space ratio is not economical and the seeds are toxic. Can you tell I grew up with a wholesale produce parent? South Florida kids are the main beneficiaries with parental warnings not to swallow seeds. Jojomzz's cherries are at the perfect point for eating.
What an incredible tail!
So cute!
Great pics and beautiful garden. Hate to say it, but the monkeys are cute, too, although I'm sure they must be annoying.
I have an idea that might work, if the device is available in your area. The device, called 'scarecrow', is a motion activated sprinkler. It swings around suddenly and shoots a strong jet of water at anything which comes into the area. It was designed to scare deer. I used one for years to protect my roses. A few times I forgot it was on, and I nearly jumped out of my skin when that jet of water hit me on the back of the neck.
Here is a google link and a Amazon link of the device: http://www.amazon.com/ScareCrow-Motion-Activated-Animal-Repellent/dp/B000071NUS/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1456800929&sr=1-1&keywords=scarecrow+sprinkler

The link pushed your post over the edge. I didn't think of the scarecrow, that's a great idea.
