collapsing pepper plants

Can anyone give me an idea of what might be causing my pepper plants to wilt? I can only guess some subterranean creature is eating the roots. Its only happening to a few while their neighbors seem to be undisturbed.

Same thing is happening to my bell and Marconi peppers. I pulled a couple and roots were dead as a doornail. I suspect phytophthora. http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/plantpath/extension/fact_sheets/Pepper_-_Phytophthora_blight.htm
