I would like to know is it safe to ship live plants and cuttings in bubble mailers?Or should I use a box?And finally,is it safe to ship while the weather is so hot?I don't want the other person to get a bunch of dead plants! Thanks all you DGers!
I have some shipping questions.
Ship your plants in a cardboard box and wrapped in newspaper. Anything plastic will rot them fast. You don't say where you are shipping from or to or what kind of plants. The type of plant will help you to determine what temperature is safe.

Hi bsy- Iris fans seem to ship fine in the heat of the summer, but they are shipped in a semi-dormant state, and dry. In fact summer is the usual shipping time from the growers.
Mostly folks on DG seem to wait until it cools off just a bit, so plants do not cook in a truck. That said, when I was planting a new garden a few years ago, I mail-ordered lots of plants and they came through just fine, in summer.
Hi,I live in Georgia and the plants would be roses. They would get shipped to Boston,MA.This would be my first time shipping out plants so I'm a little nervous.I want the plants to arrive in tip-top shape, and not a burnt pile of plant debris. Thanks for all your advice,I appreciate it!
So do you wrap the entire plant in newspaper or just the rootball? And does the newspaper have to be moistened?
I wrap the rootball in moistened paper, then plastic. I wrap leaves in dry paper. Then it's all packed in crumpled paper to fill the box.
(Open to opinions from others here though)
Sallyg has it right. You want to keep the root ball moist. I would ship Priority - it should just take a day from Georgia to NY (unless, of course, it has to travel to several points in Florida with a side trip to Puerto Rico before heading to NY).
Bsy,
I found this writeup on how to pack plants helpful when i started trading:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/502752/
I do as Sallyg mentions above
I always ship priority mail as well...in order to get the plant(s) there the fastest in warm/hot weather so they take as little stress/time as they need to.
Thank you so much everybody!I will use your advice.I appreciate you all sharing your wisdom with a beginner!Nevin. :)
