FIRST FLOWERS OF MID SUMMER 2015

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

The version that juhur posted is the one that always goes through my mind too, but I didn't know who sung it and there were so many to choose from on Youtube! I was playing clips this morning while Mike was still asleep, and it woke him up. He was grumbling at me to keep it quiet - don't know what the fuss was about, he was back to sleep and snoring within 2 or 3 minutes lol.

Back on topic - my Casa Blanca lilies are in full bloom and they are perfuming the air all around the house. I'll try to get pictures today.

Oh yeah Paint your Wagon, that one is a hoot. Who'd think Clint, singing....and Lee Marvin, right?

Can't wait for my first ever Anemone flower, soon!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Yep, Clint and old Marv singing together. It was great seeing it again, I recorded it in case Ric wants to sit down later to watch.
Sally are you waiting for Anemone blooms? I can't believe how long it has taken from bud to first bloom. I took this pic of the buds on the 14th and they had been there for days if not a whole week before I took the pic and I am just now getting the first of the buds to bloom.

Ha... wow, I hasn't thought about that western musical for ages. There was just something really weird about rough and rugged Clint Eastwood singing beautiful songs. I believe I watched it at least three times. LOL

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

After that, watch Marlon Brando in Guys and Dolls. I guess when musicals were popular, the popular actors got stuck with them at least to try!

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Frederick, MD

I'm not really a fan of musicals. I was a fan of Clint Eastwood westerns and Paint Your Wagon caught me by surprise. The first time they broke out in a song I was like, WTH is this ? But it grew on me. :) Geez, when was that ? I'm thinking early 80s ? Yikes, time flies.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Annie Get Your Gun
Pajama Game
Sound Of Music
Porgy & Bess

Frederick, MD

Does the movie Blues Brothers count as a musical ? If so, yeah, I like some musicals. Of course, there was Grease... corny as hell but any movie with Oliva Newton John in leather is fine by me. :)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Wow, I'm glad I'm too young to know about what ya'll are talking about. Official drinking song of the 70s? I wasn't old enough to drink til '01 ;-)

I like that anemone Holly..never heard of that variety before.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Some of you may be too young to remember the music of the 60's and 70's--
bit I am too old to ever forget it.....

WHO remembers "Indian Love Call"? WAYYY old!!! ..When I'm calling YOUUUUU,
UUUUh - UUUU..uuuh. Wil you answer tooo? Uuuuoh oh,,,,UUUU...Uuuh..uh...?

How about "Hang down your Head Tom Dooley---Hang down your head and cry....

How about---"Where have all the Flowers gone?...Long time passing......
(deep meaning to this song....it may make you cry).....60's--I am sure...

Geez--if I had time---I could "dazzle many of you with the songs of the 60's....and before.

Times of the GOOD music,,,,, G.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Gitagal ,,I know the feeling , 60's 70's ..
and then you started talking about WAY Old ... Nelson Eddy ,,,
How about another Oldie,? Jeanette Mc'Donald , San Francisco , The Great Earth Quake Film
lol ???

I always forget something , For the younger crowds here , you might keep in mind ? this was the days , before the original Star Trek , Entertainment was a bunch different ,
Special effect were like flying saucers as a candy dish , turned upside down glued to a plate and you could see the string holding them on the film , lol
The original War Of The Worlds was something for it's day .
Robinson Crusoe on Mars , the the ships were lights behind a piece of film , tricked onto the movie film ,,, Lot different then ,,,,

Monsters were close-ups of iguanas and horned toads, and in the old Flash Gordon serials the rocket ship in space spewed fountain-like sparks that fell and the smoke behind rose up. The real special effects in those days were called plot, script, and acting.

The first movie I went to see after I came to the US (1951) was
"The Student Prince" with Mario Lanza. I promptly "fell in love" with him...

All this was just so new to me.....like seeing daylight for the first time....

YES!!!! And a big ol' slew of old ALBUMS to go with that turntable, too! =)

Funny, as y'all are mentioning musicals (Cam's favorite, as I have come to learn, heehee), I can't believe no one mentioned 'My Fair Lady'!
"...Are there lilac trees in the heart of town?
Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
Does enchantment pour out of every door?
No it's just on the street where you live..."

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Good one speedie!
Oh, The King and I had some nice tunes, too.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Speedie - 78s, not 33s?

Indeed, My Fair Lady and The King and I, how did we miss them?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I have a box of 78's. Never listen to them any more---they are mostly
"romantic" (to me--in those days) music as well as lot of German songs.
They are cracking and breaking if I were to handle them.
I still have (I think) the little 78 record player my children used.
Only thing I could still play 78--or 45's on. SOOO scrathchy!!

I had a pile of 45's too. Mathew (my DD SO) took them all a couple of years ago.
He is into all this old music.

I also still have my old Walnut console record player from the 50's. A nice piece of furniture---
sitting all mildewed in the corner of my shop. Inside--all the tubes are mildewed as well.
I still remember that I paid $157 for it. My special, weird talent. I remember what
all kind of things cost when I bought them....
Have to see if Mathew may want to have it to "play" at refurbishing it.

off topic....**************************** please forgive me.....

My daughter, Benita, who has lived in Seattle for years, is driving cross country
with her huge dog, Dublin, and 2 cats. Her SO, Mathew, got a job in Rockville
so they are re-locating. He already drove across the US almost a month ago
to start his new job. They are renting a small home with a yard.
I am sooo happy, they will be only an hour's drive from me. !!! YEAHHH!
We will be able to get together now and then.

Benita should be half way across the country by now. She left Seattle on Saturday.
I expect she should arrive in Rockville sometime this weekend.

She refurbished and spiffed up her house in Seattle which is now on the market.
Re-tiled the bathrooms, painter...repaired...etc...Gotta hand it to her for determination.

AND--I can only admire her "guts". Driving cross-country with 3 animals is no small
feat. Stopping at Motels that accept pets along the way.

Not sure IF all their belongings have arrived yet...Unpacking will be a huge chore.

I will breathe easier when I know she has arrived safe and sound....and exhausted, I am sure...

Just wanted to share this with all of you. Thanks. Gita

Gita, How great to have her close to home again. Let us know when she arrives safe and sound.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

How nice that you'll have your daughter so close by. Very exciting and quite a trip for her with the animals.

My brother moved from Boston to Texas this past weekend and is now waiting for the movers to arrive with his stuff.

Hope your daughter enjoys living in this area again.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

One of the reasons she so wanted to be back on the East Coast--anywhere--
was to have more sunshine--and less rain.

First option (almost) was Rhode island. Glad that fell through! 8 hr. drive--YUK!
Rockville is just over an hour. YEAH!

Thank you all for the well wishes. She is more than capable and able--no matter what
comes her way. An amazing Girl!
G.

Frederick, MD

Happy for you, Gita ! Enjoy having her close by !

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, how wonderful! Your other daughter must be thrilled as well. If you take 70 to 270 down to Rockville, you'll go right through Frederick... just sayin'. I'll put on a pot of coffee any time!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill--
It is not as far West as you posted. Nowhere near Frederick.
They will live just off of Rockville Pike.

I mapped it out--and the Rt. I would go is I-95 to Rt. 200 W. (ICC) and then
meander through various roads/streets to their home.

Going #495 to I-270 and up is another way--but more out of the way.

I am hoping she would be arriving "home" any day now. Safe and sound--♥ ♥

Mostly--I am looking forward to some get-togethers--either here--or at their house.
Cookout! Crabs! Beer and wine! Whatever....
I have offered to go and help them unpack once all their 'stuff" arrives by the
moving van.......a life in cardboard boxes.....one way to look at it....
It may already be there...who knows....

G.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

How wonderful to have your daughter nearby again!

Gita, I just wanted to make sure you have an EZ Pass transponder. The ICC is a toll road but doesn't have any toll booths, so the transponder is mandatory.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

a little White Coneflower that I got a few weeks ago has its first bloom. First Coneflower in my yard since I have lived here. That's a milestone!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

SS--
Thank you so much for reminding me of the toll road. (ICC).
I knew it was a toll road--but still do not know how much the toll is. Do you?

It must be similar to the new "Express Lanes" they just completed on I-95
to #43 (White Marsh Blvd.). It is also a Toll road (very minimal toll) and
E-Z pas required--but there are NO toll booths. Mostly used by commuters.

I do have E-Zpass and will be using it anyway to go through the Tunnel.
I assume what you call a "transponder" is the thing we stick on the window. Right?

I have never had any need to use the ICC (#200) yet. I will make sure my daughter
knows about this in case they are coming to visit ME.
Of course--they can take I-270 or Rockville Pike down to #495 and then to I-95 as well.

Hmmmm--Is E-Zpass just an East Coast thing? Maybe they don't even have this????

Waiting impatiently to hear from my DD as to how far she is by now.
I expect she should arrive here some time this weekend?????
She started driving last Saturday. A week sounds about right. Will let you all know....

Gita

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally, your first coneflower?! Yay!

Gita, I have no idea what the tolls are, but they're not cheap! At least 2 to 3 dollars from 95 to 270. The white transponder that you have on your windshield is all you need.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

It's a nice road though!!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

You just reminded me, Sally...I bought a White Coneflower last year but I haven't seen it this year...maybe because it hasn't bloomed yet!
