Hi all .. I have just found this site .. awesome! Could anyone tell me what the name of this plant is growing in my friends garden? Its very unusual .. it has the flower growing under the leaves :) Thanks
Please can you identify this plant?
It looks somewhat similar to Podophyllum 'Spotty Dotty.'
it is kaleidescope because of the location of the flower on the stem it is a relative of Spotty Dotty

The patterning looks a little more like 'Kaleidoscope' than 'Spotty Dotty', though both are variable. The flowers are held in the same position, under the leaf, on both cultivars but the dark red flower on the plant in question also looks like 'Kaleidoscope' (vs. "bright red' in 'Spotty Dotty').

kaleidescope flower is at the junction of the leaf
spotty dotty is halfway up one of the stems

Interesting. I'm not sure if the patent descriptions for the two cultivars make a deliberate distinction on that particular point? They may, or one might interpret that they say the same thing with slightly different wording?
'Spotty Dotty': "Inflorescence: Borne on the petiole below the base of the terminal leaf".
http://patents.justia.com/patent/PP17361
'Kaleidoscope': "Inflorescence: Borne at the end of the petiole at the base of the terminal leaf."

If it's a consistent feature, sure.
Here's a photo claimed to be 'Kaleidoscope' that appears to show the inflorescence emerging not at the base of the leaf but below a short leaf petiole... ?

i have many of both plants purchased from Terra Nova and
kaleidescope are all at the junction of the leaf
and all of the spotty dotty are half way up one of the stems
the pict you link to is questionable and not a good image
here is a good pict of kaleidescope here on DG

and the picts with the patent are very correct
