Seed Purge 2014

Rogers, MN(Zone 4b)

Hi Everyone! legallyheidi is not able to host her annual seed purge this year, and gave me her blessing to go ahead and host one. I had so much fun last year being involved in Heidi's, and am very excited for this year! Her setup seemed to work really well, so I’m going to follow a lot of the same rules and guidelines.

This swap is currently open to the US and Canada. If anyone international is interested, please message me and I'll look into postage pricing and details.

DATES AND DEADLINES

Sign up here and send seed packages by October 18th – my address is in the exchange.
Return seed packages will be sent out by December 1st.

GUIDELINES

1. Sign up here and post your HAVE and WANT list.

2. Get your seeds ready. For every pack of seeds you send you will receive one pack back, up to a maximum of 100 packs. Each should be properly labeled with the type of plant and name/cultivar. Feel free to include extra information regarding growing conditions and requirements if you’d like.

If possible, please limit the number of packs to 5 or less per cultivar – 5 packs each of 10 different types of beans is fine, but sending in 50 packs of all Kentucky Wonder Pole Beans is a bit excessive. If you have more than 5 of a specific cultivar and still want to get rid of them, you can include them and mark them as EXTRA, and they’ll be disbursed as bonus packs on top of everyone’s regular swap amounts.

Seeds should be from known varieties/cultivars. Please no hybrids or unknowns unless they are EXTRA.

All types of seeds are accepted – vegetables, herbs, annuals, perennials, trees…etc. Commercial and self-saved seed are both fine. Commercial seed can be left in its original packaging or split up into separate packs – just note that it is commercial if you repackage it. Seed should be from 2012 or newer – older seed can be sent in as EXTRA if you’d like.

Try to include a decent amount of seed in each pack. Examples:
TINY SEEDS (POPPIES, BASIL, PORTULACA): 1/4 tsp
SMALL FLOWER SEEDS (CALENDULA, BACHELOR BUTTONS): 1/2 tsp
LARGE FLOWER SEEDS (4 O’CLOCKS, NASTURTIUM, THUNBERGIA): 10 seeds
SMALL VEGETABLE SEEDS (TOMATO, PEPPER, EGGPLANT): 20 seeds
LARGE VEGETABLE SEEDS (SQUASH, BEANS, CORN): 10 seeds

3. Mail me your seed packs and info. Send the following in a bubble wrap envelope: the seed packs you are contributing, an address label with your name and address on it, 5 US stamps (Canadians can send monetary funds), your DG screen name, your wish list, and a list of seeds you do not want (if any). If you have promised certain seeds to someone on here, please clearly label who they should go to and separate them from the general swap packs.

Let me know if you have any questions. I will be adding my have and want list tonight and will be adding to it as I save more seed from the garden. Can’t wait to see what everyone has!

- Anna

This swap is also posted on GardenWeb under my screen name bumblebee23.

St. Annaparochie, Netherlands

I would like to join the swap. In september i put here a list of my haves and wants.

Thumbnail by Flinter
(Tracy) Lk Pan, FL(Zone 9a)

I have been trying to compile a list of "wants", and to tell the truth, I find the task simply overwhelming! I come from a place and time when gardening was restricted to things that were edible (veggies & fruits) and landscaping consisted of PIA bushes that had to be trimmed. The only thing that was grown for pure enjoyment would have been a rose or two, some lilies, and the good ole potted geranium. Pretty things usually served a practical purpose, such as ditch lilies so that steep ditches would not need to be mowed.

I've just gotten to a place where I can garden year round and have the time to play with things that are simply ornamental, but I have absolutely no idea what a lot of them are! I'm finding that I tend to gravitate toward large leaf tropical types of plants (love the foliage) and don't really care for things that are dainty and delicate (wildflowers or butterfly types), however, I would appreciate some pretties, especially if they're fragrant. Anything for the hummers are a plus, I love those tiny things! Veggies and fruits are still very important to me, but I am no longer going to go into full production with a gigantic flat garden that requires acreage and machinery to maintain! Raised beds and containers are a Godsend! I have also made up my mind that only heirloom &/or OP veggies will be grown and will try my best to do so organically for the first time in my life! I am going to need some serious guidance in that area as well!

With all of that being said (sorry for the huge post!), I am going to leave it up to those with more knowledge to select some seeds for me to try. Maybe in a year or two I will be able to be more precise with my want list, but for now, it's all new to me so I don't really know!

WANT (these are just a suggestions, I don't have any of these and this list was compiled from an image search)

Any heirloom &/or OP veggies, we like them all. No squash please, unless it can grow vertically. Takes up too much room. Pole beans only.

Any hollyhock
Alstromeria (Peruvian Lily)
Campanula
Any mum - double or semi double
Fern leaf clematis
Carnations
Bleeding Hearts (looks interesting)
Gunnera
Lavender (love the fragrance!)
Jasmine
Sweet Woodruff
any Heliconia
any Ginger
Coccinea
any Lily
any Daylily
Bird of Paradise
any Canna lily
Red Royal Poinciana (only need 1 to germ!)
Eastern Coral Bean (Erythrina Arborescens)
Michelia Champaca

HAVE

Tomatoes from Baker Creek:
Cherokee Purple
Gold Medal
Spear's Tennessee Green
Amish Past
Purple Bumblebee
Mortgage Lifter
Pink Brandywine
Chadwick Cherry
Green Vernissage
Blue Beauty
Blue Berries
Sungold Select II
Dester
Yellow Brandywine

Texas Crème 12 (conch peas)

Rogers, MN(Zone 4b)

I find it very hard to come up with a want list too FloGro...although my issue is that I usually want everything!

I would love some of your Cherokee Purple, Gold Medal, Amish Paste, and Sungold Select II seeds if they're available. I have several Hollyhocks listed in my have list above if you're interested, and I think all of my vegetables listed are heirlooms except the Super Sweet 100 tomatoes.

Ocean Springs, MS

Finally home and can work on my list tomorrow. We got some rain... finally and some of my vines that I thought froze last year have sprouted! One is my bleeding heart and the other is my corkscrew vine. But I'm afraid that they won't have time to bloom and set seed before the weather changes.

Jamestown, OH

Froggie, I'll set those aside for you.
Flogro, I have Missouri Wonder pole bean, Trumpet Lily mix and single light pink Hollyhock if you would be interested. I would love to try your Purple Bumblebee, Blue Beauty, and Dester tomatoes.

Jamestown, OH

Absinthe27, I have a few Thai Pink Egg tomato seeds I can share with you. I would like to try your Hollyhock Halo Cerise and Red Malabar Spinach please.

Flinter, I am hoping that you have pink Huella, Antwerp Hollyhock, Bachelor's Buttons Black Boy, Sweet Pea Cupani and Caucasian elecampagne and hope you find something you want from my list.

I also have:
Carmen Sweet Pepper
Cutleaf Teasel
Large Leaf Sorrel
Helenium Short & Sassy
Goldenrod
Kobold Liatris
Bittersweet Vine

Ocean Springs, MS

Found my seeds! Making a list later this evening!

Rogers, MN(Zone 4b)

That's the best when something you thought was gone suddenly sprouts up!

I would love the Thai Pink Egg Tomato seeds midwestfarmwife. Thank you! I'll set your requested seeds aside.

(Tracy) Lk Pan, FL(Zone 9a)

absinthe27, I will gladly set those tomatoes aside for you. I think I would like to try 2 of your hollyhocks if they're still available: the country romance mix and the old fashioned black. I could also use your dill and rosemary.

midwestfarmwife, I will gladly set those tomatoes aside for you as well. I'm set with pole beans for now, just picked up some half runners and I have Ky Wonders sprouting now. I would love to try the goji berry if you have any, Froggie wants some too, and she asked first. I would also like the castor bean if there's enough (absinthe27 has these on her want list). I would also love either the Black Krim or Mr. Stripey. (I have a tomato fetish!)

I just added some more veggies to my "have" list if anyone is interested.

Jamestown, OH

FloGro, I have Goji Berry, Castor Bean, and Black Krim Tomato for you.

Jamestown, OH

Froggie,

I think my Hardy Hibiscus is Luna Rose. I found a tag for it, and here is a picture. Does this look like Luna Rose?

Thumbnail by midwestfarmwife
Ocean Springs, MS

Yes, I think there is one called Luna Blush, too! I can get Luna Blush seeds from my sister. I will have to wait until Monday to get my list posted. Kids are here and we are having movie night. Then the Saints play tomorrow! Oh, yes, I am a BIG Saints fan! It is so dry here that some things are just not setting seeds! Oh, how I want some rain!

Jamestown, OH

Wish I could send you some rain from Ohio. One day last week we had 5", and two days later had another 2"! This has been the wettest year we can remember...the main garden under water almost all season. We made another raised bed in the lowest spot.

Rogers, MN(Zone 4b)

Received two seed packages from swappers today! It's going to be like christmas checking the mail every day until the swap is over. Better than junkmail!

Rogers, MN(Zone 4b)

FloGro - I've set those packets aside for you.

Otway, OH(Zone 6b)

midwestfarmwif, your part of Ohio is getting rain and my part is getting none. Kathy

Rogers, MN(Zone 4b)

We're up to 16 participants and I just posted the swap on Idig this morning too, so we'll probably have some more people joining. We're getting a great variety of seed!

I cleaned out half of the vegetable garden this week and have added more seeds to my have list above. Still waiting for the beans to finish drying on the vines, and then I should have Rattlesnake, Scarlet Runner, and Purple Podded pole beans to add along with some herbs and a few more flowers. It's only 55 degrees here today...I miss the gardening season already and am really not looking forward to snow - especially since we got 70 inches last year and the farmers almanac says we are going to have an awful winter again this year...

(Tracy) Lk Pan, FL(Zone 9a)

70 inches!?! Shoooweee! I was getting homesick, but I think I just got over it! lol

Rogers, MN(Zone 4b)

Ha! Yeah...I like snow, but not THAT much!
