Clean slate but some challenges

Stroudsburg, PA(Zone 6a)

I am helping a friend landscape her home. We took everything out and extended a small planting area delineated by pavers. Now is the challenge. It is shady with some filtered sun, need plants that do fairly well in dry conditions and are very deer resistant. The main problem is that I need something tall and fairly narrow for between the windows and something that would provide winter interest (not nessesarily both for the same plant). I would love to hear suggestions for any part of the area. What do you love that is deer resistant and likes shade?
