Bug eggs or some kind of seeds?

Bull Valley, IL

I was going to plant something but when I looked at the edge of the garden in the edge of the mulch there were these weird pods that I first thought were tiny mushrooms. They are attached to the ground/mulch, some have holes at the top; some are missing the top half of the bulbous part and some have not opened.

The flowers I have closest to this area are pink anemones and they have gone to seed and are 'dying back'. The bush closest is a Dogwood with the red stems/branches.

I am in Zone 5 and it has been very rainy.

I have a LOT of Pill bugs in the garden and I have seen Carpenter ants that came with the mulch as well as seeing a number of flies lately. (neighbor has large dogs with large poop she does not clean up often enough but that is a good 15 to 20 feet away.

A FRIEND JUST TOLD ME ON FACEBOOK....IT IS CALLED THE BIRD'S NEXT FUNGUS. INTERESTING BUT YOU DON'T WANT IT CLOSE TO YOUR HOUSE OR YOUR SIDING. THE 'SEEDS' ARE SPORES AND WHEN RAIN HITS THEM THEY ARE PROJECTED UP AND STICK TO SHRUBS, TREES, SIDING, WALLS, ETC.

Please help identify.

Thank you,

Kay
