I purchased a wisteria plant two years ago, I think. The tag that came with it suggested that this plant will grow upwards of twenty feet in length. To keep it from over-throwing my yard, it is planted in a large pot with a trellis. Occasionally, I trim the excessive wanderers. The plant has never had a bloom on it. Am I doing something wrong? Thank you in advance!
Why does my Wisteria never bloom?
Possibly cutting off potential blooms when pruning!
It may also need more root volume than you can ever provide in a pot.
You should decide whether you want that plant for its qualities - warts and all - or whether you want a more restrained behavior from your landscape plants.
I'd vote for more plants that do what they want to do - and that you want that in your garden. Many exotic species of wisteria (the Japanese and the Chinese species, specifically) are major invasive pests in the southern US.
Punt your problem plant, and grow any one of thousands of other species that you won't ever have to worry about.
I have heard that sometimes it can take years for wisteria to get their first bloom. There used to be a wisteria 'whisperer' at a nursery I used to work and that's what I always heard from him. I would definitely take it out of the pot though.
