Seed starting MAF part 3 5/23/14

Muddy--

There is a slight difference in the blooms between yours and mine.

Yours seem to be somewhat double.
Mine are definitely single--daisy-like.

The link Sally just posted shows the double bloom ones as "Summer Sun".
It also says the common name of is "ox eye" . There IS an "Ox Eye Daisy"--
but that is white, I believe--like a wild, field daisy.

In Sally's link above--it states this:

Plants in the genus Heliopsis are both similar in appearance to and closely related to those in the genus Helianthus, the true sunflower. Heliopsis is sometimes commonly called false sunflower.

Genus name is from Greek helios meaing sun and opsis meaning resembling.

Var. scabra differs from species plants by having hairy and rough-textured (scabrous) leaves and stems with the leaves being thicker. Upper leaves may be entire with basal leaves toothed. Cultivars of var. scabra are more commonly grown in gardens that the species itself.

'Sommersonne' is a compact, clump-forming, upright cultivar which typically grows 2-3' tall. Features single to double, daisy-like flowers (2-3" diameter) with golden yellow rays and deep orange-yellow center disks atop stiff stems that seldom need staking. Noted for its lengthy summer to early fall bloom period. Coarse, serrate, ovate to lanceolate, deep green foliage. Good fresh cut flower.

I think it could well be the plant Sally mentioned, Heliopsis helianthoides var. scabra which is a "false sunflower" that is also called ox-eye sunflower, not to be confused with ox-eye daisy! I can see why even botanists lump them all together as "darn yellow composites" or DYC, a term I just learned on the Plant ID forum.

It is a wonderful plant, whatever it is!

Wanted to show you all that there ARE seeds in the spent tops of Phlox.
Just look closely--and you will see the developing seed cases.
When they turn brown--pick them. I think there is 1 or 2 lg. seed in them.

Have you ever looked? Ever wonder how long it would take to grow
a Phlox from seed? Just somewhere out of the way....drop some...
I would love to grow A FEW MORE phlox DAVID....Only have one so far.
have picked a few seeds...very few....

Here is a close-up of the seeds in the spent "heads" of the Phlox.

I think I've heard it's still a good time to seed beets, too -- anybody know?

Next week will be warmer again, "they" say.
