I planted 12 small leland cypress last summer. By winter's end they are mostly brown/dead on top with green at the bottom. Some better, some worse but all brown tops. Are they dead? Will they come back? Do I need to prune the tops off? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Probably not the best choice for your zone but you could try pruning out the dead stuff unless you can get a refund for performance issues.
Generally when an tree dies back from the top, that is a sign that it is badly ill, probably dying. If you prune all that top off, you won't ever have much of a tree, IF the plant survives at all. Most plants you purchase will have a one-year warrantee, so check on that.

Depends on the nursery nowadays Ken as for the one year warranty. Our local chain nursery in Atlanta has a lifetime warranty on shrubs and trees. Now where did I put my receipt again?

My goodness, a lifetime, huh. That is exceptional service! I have a feeling, with our unusually cold winter, the company will be replacing an awful lot of trees/shrubs.

I bet they are counting on a lot of folks losing their receipts.
Probably praying for it as well. LOL
