The following message was posted on a science newsletter site. The question is, does the world really need a hotter pepper than the current champions?
The genome of a domestic pepper plant and its wild cousin has given up the secret to its spiciness, which could lead to even spicier versions of the plant. "The findings will provide foundation for further developing molecular makers and [incite] research on related pepper agronomy traits, and help breeders accelerate the research of new breeds by molecular biology techniques," said Sichuan Agricultural University researcher Cheng Qin, co-author of the study, which appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
