snow which is helping. I love the fact that both of the red-bellied woodpeckers came to the suet feeder. so I will number our yard birds this year.

Just the usual suspects for me so far, well, except for the Kingfisher. They don't usually hang out at my pond, but lately this one has been visiting on a regular basis.

That's impressive iris- no HOSP. They were our #5 bird this year and in grand numbers, too. The Starling was #11, but just a couple of them.

When I did the GBBC last year I was told that purple finches were not known to be in our area. Sorry, they have always seemed chubbier than a house finch with heavier markings. They have visited in the winter for years, but this is the first time they have come this year. Usually only 2 or 3 birds, but they are there.
I miss in the spring birds that we used to see like the eastern towhee.

We got our Rock Doves this weekend. :) I'm still befuddled about not finding any Kestrels; we saw good numbers of them up until the end of the year. Any raptor right now is hard to find in our area. Some think this bitter cold is driving them further south.

Keep trying I had Kestrels last week in the usual locations.

The Lesser Whitethroat is an unusual wintering record of a bird that is normally a summer visitor. It is being helped by a mild winter, and by wintering in a birder's garden with a good supply of food. Quite a lot of people going to see it, particularly as it appears to be of a Central Asian subspecies.

Nice Patti, that's my #15 (Red-bellied) woodpecker. Handsome male at the suet feeder yesterday. It's been to cold to go down to the river, though it's probably a good time to go with most other areas of rivers frozen.

Mrs. Ed, For some reason my woodpeckers are not going to the suet, but there was a Carolina Wren hitting it pretty hard today.

While I only got a glimpse of the Sapsucker and not a photo, I did get a few shots of its handiwork. Or is that billiwork? beakiwork? Oh well, you know what I mean. I've never seen such an intricate carving before. This was at least 15 inches (38 cm) tall and all the way around a tree that was almost 6 inches (15 cm) in diameter.

Wow Patti, that is a whole lot of "handiwork." i've never seen that much damage. There must have been some good larvae action in that tree.

Twice i've seen this male Red-bellied at the base of the tree where all the suet had fallen. Seems the squirrels like the hot pepper suet this year, so I have a lot fallen on the ground. Then the dog licked it up, came in the house and upchucked it. lol.

I really would like to get a carolina wren this year. i've had them twice in the past, but not for too long.

Indeed, Resin. But it's moved on. I think my sightings of the wrens were usually in February. I know they are in the area in the summer, but maybe food is scarce when they visit my yard.

No redpoll sightings this year yet either!!

Only 2 purple finches here & that was when we got our fresh heavy snow.

#13 today American crow flew aver the car while we were driving. they usually nest around here in the spring, but not in winter, of course.

Patti, the Painted Redstart and the Baltimore Oriole that have been at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge this winter have been feeding from sapsucker holes, so good to have! I hope they are still there as I'm going to try to see them this afternoon.
