What new-to-you tomato(es) are thinking trying out for '14?

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

The weather outside is frightful, so we need to get a good winter topic going.

OK, so here's one. We all post our lists once we have decided what we are actually starting and planting out for the year. But what are you just THINKING about. Maybe you've not really decided yet and it might not really make it to the final list. I've always got to have a few new-to-me just for the fun of it. So here are mine for this year:

Purple Bumblebee
Grandma's Pick
Louisiana All Season
Glovel Tomato

So if anyone want's to talk me out of the above due to personal experience or wants to tell what they think I should be adding just post away.

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

for '14, i plan on trying out:

Great White
Paul Robeson
Green Zebra
Pink German Johnson

And some tomato seed i got as a bonus gift labled "Pomodoro Marmande"

Over the summer of '13, i Tried:

Yellow pear (grew well, but didnt quite strike my palette)
Cherokee Purple
Indigo rose (failed miserably, never grew taller than 1 FT and never bloomed)
Better Boy
Aunt Ruby's German Green (also grew well, but again wasnt too favorable to my taste buds, lol)

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

To many to list. 18 new ones for 2014. I have the seeds already.
One is a seedless.
A couple of the new cherries from Johnny's.
Rest are from companies I have not bought from before.
Trying to get some for in the high tunnels that will get big. Most high tunnel tomatoes are only about 1¼" diameter.
I will be planting 450 in high tunnels & 500 outside.

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow! That's a lotta tomatoes! Sounds like fun though.

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

interesting how you can get seeds for a "seedless" tomato, or anything else, lol

Salem, NY(Zone 4b)

Country, the new cherries that you bought from Johnny's. Were those the Artisan ones bred by Fred Hempel? He posts a lot at Tville and told us where some of them would be placed for sale. Those places are Johnny's, High Mowing, some place in England and TotallyTomatoes to date.

I like the pinkand purple Bumblebees, also Blush, and I think there's one there that was originally called Maglia Rose that I've also grown. I've also grown his Lucinda, which has Silvery Fir tree as one parent with that gorgeous SFT foliage, and is a GWRipe, but it's a bit on the tart side,

I think most of you know that I no longer can grow my own plants and there are four folks who do it for me for seed production. Craig in NC does send up to me certain ones, but the last three years here in NYS next to the Vt border have been a bummer.

New ones for 2014? Ever since I fell I vowed to get varieties that would be new to all or most, and so far, ones sent back to me or expected soon include:

Anna Margaet's Heart
Loka, from the prison market in Accra, Ghana
Normandia
Heartbreaker
Iva's RedBerry
Brazilian Giant
Istra
Giroc
Orangevyi Velikan

... and many more to come.

Calgary, Canada

Some new to me that I might try are:

Orange Minsk
Helsing Junction blues
Lyana
Chadwick's Cherry
Black Cherry
Principe Borghese
Black Truffel
Pineapple
Kalinka
Orange Mandarin

Or at least these are new to my seed stash. Probably can't do them all.

Caroline

Dearborn, MI

AMBROSIA RED
AUNT RUBYS YELLOW CHERRY
AUSTINS BLACK CHERRY
BICOLOR CHERRY
BLUSH
BLUE RIDGE BLACK
CAPTAIN LUCKY WHITE,
CASINO
CERO BLACKBURN
DIVINE MALTESE
DWARF ARTIC ROSE
DWARF WILD FRED
HUMPH
Loka, from the prison market in Accra, Ghana (hint, hint)
STRAWBERRY MARGARITA
Several new varieties that I ordered seed from Russia on Ebay ( couldn't resist)
Tarasenko 6 ( I had to beg for those seeds)
Every paste I have seeds for

Saylorsburg, PA(Zone 6a)

Of the new varieties being considered by some of you the ones I have actually grown are Paul Robeson (didn't do that great for me - other black ones have been much better - perhaps it needs a retrial, Green Zebra (have grown several times and love it), Orange Minsk ( really good), Black Cherry (grow it every year - a standard favorite), Principe Borghese (used it for drying - hasn't performed well the last couple of summers), Pineapple ( delicious but not prolific for me and sets very late).

I just placed an order with Heritage Tomato Seed for the following new ones to try:

Cherokee Purple Heart
Rosella Purple (dwarf)
Green Giant and
Grub's Mystery Green - I'm growing these two green ones to compare with Cherokee Green which I love
Dwarf Mr. Snow
Dester
Marizol Bratka (aka Purple Brandy)
Dixie Golden Giant
Casey's Pure Yellow
Manyel
Dwarf Sweet Sue
Hege German Pink

A couple of others I am also considering after I decide what vendor to use or whether I really want to buy just one variety from a given vendor, are:

Brandywine from Croatia (Can only find one vendor supplying this so far)
Joe's Pink Oxheart (Only one vendor seems to have this so far)
Fish Lake Oxheart
Gildo Pietroboni (Oxheart)
Giant Belgium
Mikado Black (Chernyi)
Orlov Yellow

I have enough with the top list I will be receiving soon but it only contains one oxheart and I always like to try a couple of new ones each year so I'll see. If anyone has Brandywine from Croatia or Joe's Pink Oxheart and would like to trade please email me. Thanks!

Dearborn, MI

gardadore. I can send you some seeds for Brandywine from Croatia. D mail me your address. It was a beautiful plant with beautiful tomatoes, but I didn't like the flavor.

Desters is outstanding. I think you will also enjoy Rosella Purple and Caseys Pure Yellow.

Salem, NY(Zone 4b)

I wasn't very clear in my post above. Those that I listed are for my annual seed offer elsewhere in January.

I don't yet have a clue as to what the new ones to be grown out this next summer will be, well I do as to which ones didn't make it this past summer, as to regrows since seeds for them are to be found no where else..

I've already grown,or had grown for me, many that are on your lists, and some I think are really outstanding, so you have a lot to look forward to IMO.

Gardadore, I think you'll love Joe's Pink Oxheart, it's one that I first introduced by SSE listing it and also offering it my annual seed offer, I think two years ago, so it doesn't surprise me that there's still only one vendor. Nancy, Humph was introduced byone of the persons who does seed production for me and it's a darn good green when ripe IMO.

Thank you so much Nancy!!! You are really helping me complete my 2014 Wishlist!! I didn't read this posting until after reading your d-mail. You have made my day!! Am looking forward to trying the Desters as it has gotten such outstanding reviews!!

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Some of the cherry tomato are those from Johnny's.
I picked some to replace the colors that didn't perform for us, mainly cracking.
Blush & Nova.

Oakland Park, FL(Zone 10b)

This is my growing season right now, and the first year I'm actually paying attention to my tomatoes and trying to learn :-) I currently have in my garden:
Black Cherry
Sun gold
Egg yolk
Cherokee purple
Green zebra
Fioletovyi Kruglyi
Pineapple

I've grown the sun gold and black cherry in the past and even with little attention would usually produce 1-2 nice rounds of tomatoes. The rest are all new so we will see how it goes with a little TLC. The summer here is typically to hot / humid to do much but I am going to try my hand with currant tomatoes that seem like they may take South Florida heat. Perhaps the Everglades Currant and Sara Galapagos. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We need color in this thread.
This is one of our high tunnels.

Oooo, you can almost smell the tomato plants in there CountryGardens.

Thanks for the warm photo on this cold day!

Saylorsburg, PA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Carolyn, for the input on Joe's Pink Oxheart. I finally ordered it from LazyOxFarms where the prices of the packets include the shipping. It makes it worth buying just a couple of packets from them. I also got the Giant Belgium and added Virginia Sweets from them as well so my 2014 wish list is just about complete!

Country Gardens - that is a wonderful photo - thanks for sharing. It is a great stimulus as we sit inside with the ice and snow around us!! I'm already salivating for a home grown tomato! Too bad it will be a long wait till August 2014. But I can dream!!

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Might as well do 1 more.

Going to try Tennessee Britches and Tennessee Green.

Cville, let me know how your Tennessee Britches does for you. I tried them in the past, and didn't have good luck with them. I might have to try them again.

I would like to see a thread started some time during the summer so people can tell about their success or failure of all these tomatoes.

.

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

Good idea! I'll put it in my Outlook to try and remember. Lord knows I probably won't remember on my own LOL!

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Today I started 117 pots, 21 varieties. This is my first year doing tomatoes from seed and thanks to lurking about these tomato forums, I'm not as anxious as I was just a week ago. My test subjects are (I feel like this should be followed by an evil laugh, so.. MUHAHHAHA!!)

- Dark copia heart
- Grubs green mystery

- Matt's wild cherry
- Mortgage lifter
- Opalka

Oh Becky, you will be able to feed an army (if all goes well)! :)

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Here's to hoping anyway! I only plan on keeping 1-2 of each variety for my garden. The rest will be shared with my gardener enabler, I mean buddy, lol. Hope to possibly sell a few for a buck a pop to recoup my costs for lights, soil..

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Those all look so interesting. I am not familiar with some of them.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

All but 6 came from one person on DG. I wanted the matts wild cherry and she was kind enough to tack on a TON of bonuses for me. I swear the people on here are the most generous bunch!! Hope to pay it forward one day as well!! :D

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

I started 5-6 pots of each the other day, for 117 total pots! Man I hope they sprout for me.. I have them in my water heater closet for warmth! Aaaand I only ran out of seeds for the yellow bell and matts wild. So excited, feels like I'm expecting another child, LOL

Wow! Looks great.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Well thank you, thank you very much :D

Still no sprouts, I know they shouldn't yet, but it doesn't stop me from peeking every chance I get!

Good luck, Becky and happy growing! It sure is addictive!

I'm another who will be watching for an update thread.
