Looking for lilies at least as red as...

Albany, ME(Zone 4b)

... Tiger Red Velvet. Unfortunately this lily is too downward facing. I prefer the trumpet shapes. If there's a redder lily that would be great!

TIA

How about Red Alert? It's a longiflorum asiatic, and it is outfacing. And RED. Even lightly scented. Enduring. I've had mine for several years. It's terrific. Available at B&D Lilies and Brent and Becky's Bulbs.

Wo, this looks great! And thanks for sending the link to B & D Lilies. I've used them before, but this made it so easy. I just ordered 3 before even responding.

BUT, even though I ordered some, I'm still interested in other suggestions. I always put new plants in a trial garden til I see the color, time of bloom and habit.

Thanks again,
LAS

I was searching for the same thing a while back. The one I had, but moved and lost, and it's out of commerce, is The Vamp (not Vamp, which is orange). This is a picture from 2007. If you can find this (and I'm still looking) it's PERFECT!

Here is the entry from Dave's Garden. Unfortunately, all the pics are mine and there is no supplier.

My other red is Hiawatha, which is sometimes outfacing and sometimes down facing. It's in bloom in my yard now. Incredibly reliable, but not quite what you are looking for

I couldn't get all three to bloom at once, but this will give you an idea of the garden habits of Hiawatha and Red Alert (2nd and 3rd).

I personally really like to see garden habit, which you don't always get in pictures. I loved planting lilies in grasses because it made the stems disappear.

Thanks for pointing out The Vamp. If I find it anywhere I'll D-mail you. Hope you'll do the same. :-)

I have a very red asiatic. No scent at all. Upward facing. Has black shading near center.

I am fairly sure my lily is one called blackout.

Blackout looks good, too. I couldn't find it for sale, but have asked to get an e-mail when it's back in stock at Hallson's Gardens.

Thanks!

Hallson lilies are fantastic. I got some phenomenal Crystal Blancas there in March, on sale. They were some of the finest lilies I have ever seen, and I have ordered from The Lily Garden, B&D Lilies, Old House Gardens and Brent and Becky. Very mature bulbs for about $3 each, with multiple blooms per stem. I stumbles across their lilies while I was ordering alchemilla Mollis and geranium striatum.

One time I asked if they had Early Yellow. The response was no, they didn't. But some time later I got an e-mail saying they'd found some at the edge of a planting area, and did I want them. I got them and they're wonderful in my perennial garden!!

If I ever find The Vamp again I'll tell the world! Maybe then we could keep it in commerce. If you don't, things disappear.

Here's a link for L. 'Blackout' (sometimes written 'Black Out'), but I got mine at Walmart last year.

You're most welcome. I love that lily. :)

Here's the e-mail I got from Hallson's gardens when I asked about The Vamp.

Hallson Gardens

Hi Laurel,

I'll keep an eye out for The Vamp, but haven't seen it available from our suppliers before. We had Red Alert last year which was a really nice red LA lily like The Vamp. I might have a few bulbs of it available this fall as we have a small group of them here. The picture on our website didn't do it justice, and unfortunately I didn't get a new picture this year for it.

If you want to be notified when it is back in stock you can sign up for it here: http://www.perennialnursery.com/stock_notify.php?productid=1068

Thank you!

Chris

This is very nice of you. The Vamp is my personal favorite. There was only one source for it, and shame on me for losing it!!!

Red Alert is my next favorite, and thank goodness it is available in at least three places.
