Japanese Maple's do live here but just hang on. I'm in zone 9a and for sure my tree would rather be in zone 8 or less .
There are some green types that love zone 9a.

We had one in a pot for years, until I accidentally let it dry out one spring : ( My suggestion is to keep it in lightly dappled shade. If possible, give it northern exposure to allow for the greatest amount of "chilling hours" in the winter. Good luck!
I bought 3 in a coop 3 years ago. One seems to be doing better this year, the second, I'm not sure. The third, long gone. These I bought were supposed to be tolerant of the Florida heat. Not having the winter cold spell certainly determines their success rate.
