I recently planted a few Gaillardia. At first something was eating the flower petals. About a week later something started eating the plants, too. We sometimes have rabbits but they always leave droppings and there are none now, there are no snail/slug trails, and there is no caterpillar poop. Attached is a photo of one of the plants and as you can see the chewed edges are very ragged. I looked up grasshopper chewing but they leave smooth edges. I want to move the plants to the back yard and plant something else that hopefully won't get eaten, but at this point I'm stumped. Any ideas?
What is eating my Gaillardia?
Rough ragged edges could be sign of deer damage.
I see that I forgot to get back to your reply Seedfork. It would be extremely rare for deer to be in my area, would love to have them but the gardening issues. Turns out it was snails. It didn't look like typical snail damage, no trails, etc., and they were never around, but when I put out Sluggo (pet safe of course) just to check, there they were.
